I did this sort of stunt years ago with previous Red HGat and RHEL,
and even had some tools to switch Scientific Linux releases to the
matching CentOS releases and back. I do *not* recommend it! Resolving
the library differences for core libraries, and getting the file
systems built with the features of newer "mkfs" tools is not a
trivial
problem. The time and cleverness expended is usually better spent on
your backup process.

Hello,

I have tested the following procedure to upgrade SL7.9 to AlmaLinux
8.9.
It worked successfully.

I. The updated 'leapp-data-almalinux' package is available.
It includes Scientific Linux specific data.

II. To do the migration, please use the instruction at
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__wiki.almalinux.org_elevate_ELevating-2DCentOS7-2Dto-2DAlmaLinux-2D9.html-23migrate-2Dcentos-2D7-2Dto-2Dalmalinux-2D8&d=DwIFaQ&c=gRgGjJ3BkIsb5y6s49QqsA&r=gd8BzeSQcySVxr0gDWSEbN-P-pgDXkdyCtaMqdCgPPdW1cyL5RIpaIYrCn8C5x2A&m=hXsrYakpepVQQ-f38BU05UVhkJXppK94lI6WHxYo4RX7QKhm0Pn_5m1_EZrBzdfP&s=AIZ15pXC57fa0X-vJ5W8ww1-QBTePas-lA1NEoEoge8&e=

Prior to the 'Install leapp packages and migration data for
AlmaLinux:' step,
you should:
1). Install 'elevate-testing' repository, run:
# curl -o /etc/yum.repos.d/elevate-testing.repo
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__repo.almalinux.org_elevate_testing_elevate-2Dtesting.repo&d=DwIFaQ&c=gRgGjJ3BkIsb5y6s49QqsA&r=gd8BzeSQcySVxr0gDWSEbN-P-pgDXkdyCtaMqdCgPPdW1cyL5RIpaIYrCn8C5x2A&m=hXsrYakpepVQQ-f38BU05UVhkJXppK94lI6WHxYo4RX7QKhm0Pn_5m1_EZrBzdfP&s=SluUnYqh6OkfsQxIM03xrxsu9KCgC-Xl_IB1baWhNP8&e=

2). Apply the workaround by running:
# rm -rf /usr/share/redhat-release /usr/share/doc/redhat-release

III. Follow the rest steps unchanged.
-----------------

# cat /etc/redhat-release
AlmaLinux release 8.9 (Midnight Oncilla)

Best regards,
Takashi

thank You, Burt.

That's a bummer… I do have a few servers with services configured
I that I would have prefer to update.
I did it with centOS and work ok.

Likewise, I also had to remove extra el7 left over rpm package...
but I was mentioned on the how to I fallowed.

Hi Rejean,

I opened a bug with alma more than 6 months ago on this with no
progress; personally, I'll just back up my work and do a fresh
reinstall, since leapp seems to be risky.

Hello

I was able to use LEAPP (leapp-upgrade) to Migrate from
CentOS 7.9 to
AlmaLinux 8.9
but I am unable to do so with SL 7.9. Don't even know if it's
possible...

Tried leapp preupgrade, solved the issues... leapp upgrade
fails while
it complains that sl-release and sl-logos conflict with
almalinux-logos
and almalinux-release.

My guess for now, it's not correctly detecting Scientific
Linux's files.
Is there a way to do it ?

Any advice ?

Best regards,
Rejean
