Dear All,
"yum update" has recently started failing on some of my SL50 and SL52
64-bit machines, with the following error message:

Error: Missing Dependency: gcc = 4.1.2 is needed by package
apr-devel-1.2.7-11.el5_3.1.x86_64 (sl-security)

The machines appear to have gcc 4.1.1 installed. I'm not clear why it
hasn't been automatically updated to 4.1.2, unless it is because the
computer thinks that version 4.1.1-52.el5.2 which I have is newer than
4.1.2-42.el5 which I should have (i.e. el5.2 vs el5 might be causing
confusion). Neither "yum update gcc" nor "yum install gcc" works, so
how do I update gcc, or is there an alternative way around the problem
of apr-devel not updating?

Looking at our mirrors of the repos, gcc 4.1.2 was never released
for SL5.0 but SL.50 updates now include apr-devel-1.2.7-11.el5_3.1.i386.rpm
which requires gcc = 4.1.2 :-(

The SL5.1 and SL5.2 repos have gcc-4.1.2 so don't have this problem.
I guess that we need to backport apr-devel-1.2.7-11.el5_0.1.{i386,x86_64}

[ Remind me why people use a less than current minor version
  when TUV only supports the latest minor version
        (except under separate contract) ?
