Yeah, "LANG" is messing with a lot of programs that used to work well. It's worse with the "sort" utility. en_US.utf8 is case insensitive, and there is no way to restore proper case sensitivity to ordering except to set LANG to something sane, like 'C' or 'POSIX'.
