I think some detailed information would be helpful. One problem is
that it appears that only you have the particular custom
application that you are discussing. Perhaps part of a sample
screen (in PNG, please put it on some website) would be helpful.
Some questions: What character set are you using? Is line wrapping
on? Does the file have very long lines? Can you place your binary
and sample text files on a website for interested list members to
test? Does a smaller file or a shorter line increase response
time? Is it possible to isolate the behaviour instead of
discussing generalities?
