The other thing to do is see if the standard text widget or GtkSourceView is faster for you. http://gtksourceview.sourceforge.net/ Scintilla does things (mostly text measurement) differently to GtkSourceView and there is a good chance they have different performance profiles.
I looked at it last year and from my experience the GtkSourceView is generally slower than scintilla.
