I had just assumed that something referred to as the table of word characters would be used by, for instance, any code that needs to discern "word" boundaries... which is more than RE searches, IIRC. ;)

That's fine - I don't think that PCRE presently has a way of supplying your own definition of "word" characters (in the sense of their \w and \W character types - except by specifying locales) anyway.
