I haven't been able to see much reason to prefer one way over the
other and was hoping there'd be some more input as the status is
currently one opinion for and one against. As the current behaviour
has been active for over a year, for stability, it could be made an
option.

Also, I would expect matching (in case insensitive mode) to match the
shortest possible word from the list so that adding an auto-complete
character, for instance '(' in my case, chooses the expected word from the
list, not a much longer word that just happens to be cased the same as my
typing at the start.
Looks like this negates 'case preference' as most candidates will
be different lengths.
