It means that its probably not a problem with colour allocation or palettes. Check that SCI_GETLEXER returns something reasonable (like 3).
BTW, I do have a style_set_font STYLE_DEFAULT "!Sans", which will select a Pango font, right?
If it looks like Sans (similar to most of the UI) then its OK. If it looks really ugly then you would have mentioned it. Most likely thought to me is that cpp isn't getting associated with SCLEX_CPP through something like not linking in that lexer.
