I think I see what you may be trying to say - that the brace matching "effects" are sort of brute-forced on top of a buffer without invoking the layout engine again, and this wouldn't normally show because *usually* we are showing a bold char at the same spot where we are already showing that same char bolded? Twisted.

I really don't want to relayout the line because a brace gets highlighted. At worst, this adds enough width to reflow the line which may in wrap mode move other lines up/down. It would also slow down brace matching which already produces a noticeable slow down when cursoring over a brace (depending on platform speed etc.).
