My impression was that GNOME VFS was a largely abandoned feature
that is rarely used by applications. Has it improved recently and is
it integrated into the standard file dialogs? Trying to set up FTP in
Nautilus has been difficult and buggy. There will be problems when
using a VFS such as trying to change directory before running a tool
command. Another approach is to use an ftp filesystem such as lufs.

In the early days of SciTE there were strong feelings about
avoiding GNOME as it was a large set of extensions to install but now
is included in most distributions or easily installable. Scintilla
should remain dependent on only GTK+ but SciTE could add GNOME
features if they work well.
