I find it easier just to link to the Lua library on my system rather than building Lua into SciTE. I find it relatively straightforward in Linux :)
The only-dependency-is-GTK policy is a bit of a reaction against some Linux applications which are a pain to install because of the need to install prerequisites.
Oh more elegant, easier, etc, no doubt! But Neil likes a single executable under Linux, and he's the man that makes the decisions ;)
