Hi

As promised, I have worked a bit with autoconf, automake, and libtool,
and have rewamped the build system. I have prepared two tarballs.
One (full) is the full directory tree from which I am working, and the
other (dist) is the resulting tar-ball from a "make dist".

I have only tested the build on Linux (Debian 2.2) so far, so I would
appreciate reports on success (or not) on any other platforms.

A few notes:

* I am quite sure it needs some changes before it builds on OSX.

* I think there need to be some changes to make the location of
  '/etc/reader.conf' configurable from ./configure.

I hope you like this and will consider using this instead of the
current Makefile.* system.
