I just love this verse from "Epistle To John Goldie, In Kilmarnock", by
Robbie Burns:

O Gowdie, terror o the whigs,
Dread o blackcoats and rev'rend wigs!
Sour Bigotry, on her last legs,
Girns an looks back,
Wishing the ten Egyptian plagues
May seize you quick.....

Can some one please answer the following questions. Who were "whigs"
--supporters of the English king? Who were "blackcoats and rev'rend wigs"
--church officials --the judiciary? Apparently John Goldie wrote several
books and articles criticising the official church.

Thanks for your help. --Hugh
