Final reminder for the Border Gaitherin - Coldstream 2002.
The Second Border Gaitherin Coldstream 2002 May 4-6th May weekend reww During the May Weekend 2001, the Border Gaitherin established itself as an important event to attend in order to experience a rich variety of traditional music from Scotland and the Borders. For all ages and all levels of ability, the Gaitherin is opportunity to learn from musicians superb performers who also have a reputation for being able to pass on their skills in enjoyable workshop situations. Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian fiddle) and Chris Stout Fiddler's Bid (Shetland Fiddle) head the list of tutors. Claire Mann, Tabache teaches flute and whistle. Bodhran is taught by Mark McGuire, Deaf Shepherd and Sridam Harrison. Finlay McDonald, young graduate of the RSAMD teaches both highland and smallpipes. The dance tutor, John Sikorski is from the Scottish Step Dance Company. The other tutors are singers Gordeanna Mc Cullough and Anne Neilson, guitarists Malcolm Stitt, Deaf Shepherd and Ian Stevenson. Students from the RSAMD and Newcastle University assist in some workshops, including local youngsters Lori Watson and Lillias Kinsman-Blake. The weekend is an exciting mix. Workshops morning and afternoon offer the opportunity both to develop skills in your first instrument and to try something new. Recitals by Gordon Mooney on Border pipes, Border Young Fiddles (tutored by Jimmy Nagle of Jedburgh) and singers Elsa Lemaitre and Pat Douglas highlight the strength of local music. Rousing ceilidh music from the Small Hall Band and a concert featuring Kathryn Tickell, Chris Stout and the other tutors round off the Saturday and Sunday nights. Last year the Besom was the haunt of the teenage contingent while a learge proposrtion of thr remainder squashed into the Commercial Inn. This year a group of people calling themselves "Border Folk" will be performaing in the Newcastle Arms.
