Yes, the cylinders, 78s and the recording processes were certainly far
from accurate in capturing the absolute tempos, etc, but at the time,
that wasn't really their prime purpose. I wonder how responsible they
were for tunes being picked up by musicians in higher keys, higher
tempos, etc?

Tom Anderson noted that a few strathspeys taken directly from 78s had
been so speeded up that they became reels in Shetland. One example of
this can be heard on 'Shetland Folk Fiddling Vol 2' ("Mary Ramsay's").
