When you say RJ45, do you mean ethernet?
You can't connect a serial port to an ethernet port. It just plain won't
work. What you can do is connect a serial port to a serial port, then use
minicom or a similar package (which runs just fine in an xterm) to send
and receive from the serial port. This is called terminal emulation.
An alternative to (the admittedly slightly clunky) minicom would be seyon,
which is an entirely X-based terminal emulator. I'm sure others will have
further suggestions.
Cheers,
Andrew
