Try booting the machine in single-user mode.

At the lilo prompt type "linux single" (assuming your linux boot option is
called linux). If you have a graphical screen, Alt+X should get the "true"
LILO prompt. If this doesn't work (ie you're still readonly), try
remounting root via:

  mount /dev/hde5 / -o rw,remount

or something similar.
