Well, firstly if this is your first time using Linux, I recommend either
Redhat, Suse, or Mandrake. These offer excellent packages and are easily
set up. I would go for the version you can find or download. All of these
are available at ftp.mirrors.ac.uk/mirrors/sites (I think that is the URL).
The most difficult part is getting your Hard Drive setup. At the moment,
your windows 98 partition will probably be filling the whole hard drive.
You need to shrink this. There are 2 ways depending on if you want to keep
your data on the Win98 partition.
1 If you dont, life is easy. Just Start install of Linux (Usually bootable
from the CD) and use disk druid or fdisk. I prefer fdisk but people tell me
disk druid is easier to use.
2 If you do want to keep the data, then you need to get your hands on a
partitioning program that does it on the fly - I use partition magic. It
costs around 40 quid and is very easy to use. It lets you have lots of
control over your HD. I have a copy of version 4 which fits on a floppy if
you want a look at it.
After the HD is set up, the Linux installer tells you everything you need to
know. It is then a question of reading the online documentation and asking
this group.
If you need any more info, feel free to ask. Hope this helps

hi list,
i apologise if this is off topic, or aimed at the wrong list.
i am looking for information regarding how i would go about setting up my PC
with linux on it.
i am not very technically minded when it comes to setting up operating
systems, so i was looking for a website or something that could give me all
the necessary info that i need to get up and running.
currently i have win98 installed on my pc, and ideally i would like to have
both operating systems installed at the same time, and be able to choose
which one i use when booting up the computer. is this possible?
i also realise there are many versions of linux out there, how would i
choose which one is best suited to me?
i would be mainly using it just for experimentation with websites with flash
and shockwave content in them.
thank you for any info or pointers that you can give me.
steven.
