Did it go through a normal boot-up with assorted processes getting
started then give you a blank screen?  Or did it hang before booting?
Or did it try to start X and the screen went blank?  Or some other
variation on a blank-screen-theme?

If your machine normally starts X automatically, and if it is now
booting OK but X isn't starting properly, then you might to consider the
below.  If it's something else, I think we need some more information in
order to help.

If you use DRI/DRM I believe that 2.4.9 builds DRM drivers that are
appropriate for XFree 4.1 rather than 4.0.x and that might be causing a
problem for you.  You might want to change your kernel configuration
options and/or your XFree configuration to not use DRM and see if that
makes a difference.

There will hopefully be a clue in the X log file which is probably
/var/log/XFree86.0.log or something similar.
