This has happened to me a number of times, i dont know what causes it 
but i usually un break it  by looking at my options and checking i 
havent done anything silly like disabled the console, i rarely change 
anything, but anyway a make bzImage later and a new lilo and it seems to 
sort it out.

 Have you tried make bzDisk and booting that?

P.S if your using fbdev check your config for that sometimes that can 
really screw up the boot process.
