There is a GPL Java telnet client there already (of course running it
through browser means that you can only connect to the site you aquired the
applet from)....and of course there is Gnome terminal (GTK) and Kterm (Qt)
written in C++.

A quick check at http://www.first.gmd.de/persons/leo/java/Telnet/ shows
that I am a bit out of date - but the link they provide
(http://www.mud.de/se/jta/) is dead.
