Rod,
I don't know what the position is as far as NTL still laying new cables I
just hope that their operation as it is keeps on rolling.
I have a friend who lives in East Kilbride and gets Telewest's cable and
is as delighted with his as I am.

The cabling was laid in our street, Jedburgh Gardens, early on in the NTL
program.
NTL have have intoduced a 1,000 kbps download service now. I had a look a
couple of days ago at the cost of that for this postal code area on their web
sites...

     I abandoned BT for NTL's 'Starter-Telephone' & TV along with a second
phone line to run the PC on Dial-Up at 56kbps; got my first bill Mar 18th,
2000. That second phone line at such a low on cost was a great benefit.

Not long after it became available in this street, I dumped the NTL phone
line used for the PC's Dial-Up and put the PC on cable_modem.

Got the first bill for that in April 18th, 2001. Listed as "512 CABLE
MODEM ACCESS 24.99" 25 of anybody's money. This included the rental of the
Motorola SB4100 cable-modem for a 5 a month less the usual ubiqitous 1p. I
could have bought the modem then for 145 and I would have been charged 20
less that same 1p for the service.

So as far as I'm concerned 145 = 29 months rental of the modem.

Unless they have now started to slip in the modem as 'free' and part of a
25 package I'll be looking for a reduction at the end of that 29 months
period.

Their latest 1Meg service is 50 pm.

     Harry.
