I did some like that last year.  I used a height of 2.5" for the mascot name 
across the chest (which was screenprinted) and the number was underneath 
along the left side.  Don't put the number down too low or it will look 
funny.  I put mine appoximately 2" below the edge of the mascot name.
Look in some of your sports catalogs or google some baseball jersey images 
on the internet and you'll get a good idea.
