Grab your Phillips, it's... The Latest from The Screwdriver List!
I am trying to fire up a mobo that I got from a garage sale, mostly as a learning experience. The board is SP A586 B Rev Socket 7 Chipset: ALI Aladdin V 100 MHz Bios: Award PCI PNP 586 Cpu: K6-2/300 AFR The mobo will accept both the AT power supply (P8 and P9) or ATX (10 dual in line pins) The power supply is good-- spins hard drive on bench top. I plugged in all the system panel connectors as best I could. This may be a source of my problem. There is no RAM plugged into the mobo. When I turn on the ps, the hard drive spins up and keeps running. The fan on the CPU starts up then stops after just 1 sec. There is nothing on the monitor but in another few seconds there is one very long continuous beep. Is it the lack of RAM? The ALi Aladdin manual says it takes 168 pin DIMMs and supports 8 - 768 MB. It supports FPM, EDO and SDRAM. I tried to use a stick from my computer (168 pin, 2 notches to prevent misalignment, 133PC, 3.3 volt I believe) but it does not seat properly. The DIMM slot has the 2 alignment notches and is the proper length but does not have the locking pins that holds the stick in place. Have I not connected the connectors to the system panel correctly? The PS-ON and +3vsb must be correct since the ps comes on. If I press the reset button on the front of the computer it resets, and as long as I hold the reset button down the cpu fan stays on.I do not have any connectors left over but I am missing SMI SW and its ground, and SMI LED and its ground. (What is SMI?). The LED's on the front panel do not light up. Should I look somewhere else? I appreciate any advice/suggestions.
