Sounds about right. Could you try one thing for me - download qt from trolltech, compile it up and see if you get the same problem? (remember to follow the instructions on setting bashrc [or whatever shell you use]) It could be something as simple as the version of Qt shipped with Slack and Mdk being broken in someway.
