I once read about that, and I remember it got clear from an explanation that it doesn't really point to microsoft.com but ends up that way. In my Mozilla here, the broken URL <http://http//www.softwarelivre.org/downloads/ManualScribusEnglish.sxw> also gets completed and ends up somewhere else, Mozilla sees the (invalid) host name "http" and completes it to www.http.com and that ends up at SearchMachine.com IIRC, something quite similar leads Firefox to end up at microsoft.com Robert Kaiser
