1) Replace <period><space><space> with 
something-that-does-not-occur-in-your-text.
2) REPEAT
??????? Replace <space><space> with <space>
??? UNTIL there is nothing to replace.
3) Replace something-that-does-not-occur-in-your-text with 
<period><space><space>.
