Did you check if ghostscript is working? Can you view sample PS and PDF files
with it?
If you make a new Scribus test document with a few words, does it work?
If the problem is only with the book, if you edit its SLA file, is all of your
text there? As long as the text is there, it should be recoverable.
On my Fedora 20 Linux laptop, if I don't select a font, Scribus 1.4.5 takes the
first font on its list, which happens to be a Chinese font "AR PL UMing CN
Light" that does not have any Latin characters, and when I export to PDF, the
pages call for character positions not in the font and end up blank.
If you open a document in Scribus and the fonts are not present, Scribus asks
to map the fonts.
Could you try making a copy of the SLA file and looking for strings like
'FONT=', 'DFONT=', 'Fonts Name=' and 'Subset Name='. Maybe this is a bad idea,
but if you change all of the names, for example, prefixing them with XXX, and
then open the document, Scribus will ask to substitute them, and maybe you can
select a different font.
