I have a somewhat odd request, and I thought someone on this mailing list
might be able to help me, if you have a moment.
I'm planning on using Monkey Island in my marriage proposal. It sounds a lot
geekier than it really is, though. My soon-to-be-fiance knows I'll be asking
soon, so surprising her with any sort of traditional setup isn't going to
work. After we'd been dating a little while, it came out that she loved
Monkey Island back in the heyday of the Amiga. Since then, MI quotes and
references are sort of an inside joke with us. My plan is to have a whole
traditional romantic evening out, where she'll be expecting me to pop the
question, but I won't. Instead, after the evening is over, on the ride home
(or possibly after we're back at home) and she's confused that I never asked
her, she'll pop open her DS, load up Monkey Island (scummvm-ds), and
Guybrush (and Elaine) will have new lines.

I spoke with Ron Gilbert about it and, while he said it should be possible
to edit the data files directly through a hex editor since they're
unencrypted, I can't figure out how to go about it. I've used a hex editor
to pour through both MI1 and MI2's files, but I haven't had any success.
Since I've had no luck modifying the compiled data files, I was hoping that
something like ScummC might help me with simply extracting the data,
replacing some lines of existing text with my own, then recompiling it all
back together again.

Of course, I have no idea how to do this. I've used Scumm Revisited to find
the Room I'd like to edit (the very start of MI2, where Guybrush is dangling
from a rope and Elaine climbs down to chat and start the game), and I've
found the text within the room's script file that I'd need to modify. I just
don't know how to put it all back together again so that Scummvm can play
it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a very quick and easy
tutorial that will allow me to extract and then recompile the data? I
realize it's a bizarre request. Feel free to mock me openly in your reply; I
won't mind. :)

Thanks,
Kristian Bland
