Hi dudes...

I was just thinking...the difference between guys like Ricky Martin and the
Backstreet Boys and guys/bands like Jeremy/Sunny Day or Thom Yorke/Radiohead is
this. Ricky Martin is in the entertainment industry. If you watch his music
videos you might say "Wow, what a fake." Well, here's news: he's a performer.
He makes a living and sells records by going out and smiling for the crowds and
shaking his little tush all over the world (i.e. faking it). Rather than being
someone who uses music to convey truth and beauty or to make you think, he is
making music to help people have a good time (not to say he is not an artist by
any means, but he is more an entertainer than artist). You take a band like
Sunny Day, and they are artists. They write music for the primary purpose of
creating something beautiful (i.e. truthful). That's why you love the way Sunny
Day makes you think (whoever you are who said that), I think. Ummm, I'm not
going to say too much more but do you guys catch my drift? I hope no one thinks
this is critical of either artist or performer. In the music business,
especially in rock n' roll and it's various bastard children there are few pure
artists or performers and many hybrids. Sunny Day does rock, but they rock the
soul just as much as the booty.

Happy trails,

John
