To be clear, there's nothing stopping me from invoking "gem install" for all
of the stuff I need. This is just my local machine, and I'm working with a
custom-compiled Ruby 1.9.2 isolated within my home directory.

The whole point of this exercise is to improve my understanding. Using
Bundler would defeat the purpose.

Bundler is actually on my list of gems-to-install-manually. :) I intend to
test-drive several gem-templating modules, including Mr. Bones, Jeweler, and
NewGem. Jeweler's Rakefile has a dependency on Bundler.
