SD RUBY FEATURED TALK FOR JULY: Alex Boster from AppFolio - "A Survey of Surprisingly Difficult Things" Do words like timezone, currency, and address make you cringe? Well, they should. This talk will share some stories of dealing with things like this in production applications. You probably went through some pain when you discovered that "simple" real world topics are often not so simple. What if you'd had a cheat sheet, or at least a heads up? Many seemingly simple "real-world" things end up being much more complicated than anticipated, especially if it's a developer's first time dealing with that particular thing. Classic examples include money and currency, time, addresses, human names, and so on. We will survey a number of these common areas and the state of best practices, or lack thereof, for handling them in Rails. SECOND TALK: Rebecca Colavin and Daniel Rojas - "Introduction to Lambda Expressions" For new web developers, Lambda expressions are some of the toughest concepts to understand and implement. This presentation is our attempt to demystify lambdas and to show how, in the right context, they can make your code efficient and readable. LIGHTNING TALKS Emma Castor - "Learning How to Learn" People learn differently at different times in their learning. This talk will take you through the earliest stages of a junior developer's learning, helping shed some light on the best ways to learn at your skill level and, if you're a mentor, give insights for how to support the ongoing growth of your less experienced peers. Mina Chuong - "To Regex, or Not to Regex" The what, why and how of getting started. If you are interested in giving a lightning talk at one of our future Meetups, you can sign up here: http://bit.ly/1Nsq9g8 (Google Form). Lightning talks are 5 minutes and a great chance to dip your toes in if you've always wanted to talk at SDRuby, but haven't had the chance to yet. RAFFLE We'll be giving away a few ebooks, software licenses, etc, using our super fun Rafflr! AFTERPARTY After the meeting, we'll head over to Rock Bottom Brewery for a round or two of drinks sponsored by Notch8. .... DIRECTIONS Meetings are held on the UCSD campus, at 7:30pm, on the first Thursday of the month. If you plan to drive, follow the directions below and make sure to get a parking pass.
