It’s officially the holiday season, and what better way to celebrate
than to talk Ruby with your favorite enthusiasts? Okay, that might be
a stretch, but you know you love a good SD Ruby Meetup, and we’ve got
a fantastic one coming up this week! We've got some great speakers
lined up, as well as a sponsor for the after party at Half Door
Brewing. You don't want to miss it! It all starts at 7:00pm at LEARN
Academy, located at 704 J Street, practically across the street from
the ballpark.

Metered parking downtown is free after 6pm or 8pm, depending on the
area, so double-check the meter before you leave without paying. There
are also several paid parking lots nearby, if you so choose.

FEATURED TALKS FOR DECEMBER:

Emma Castor - "Managing High Volume Data Imports"

When you have a large data set it isn't always easy to move it from
Point A to Point B. Fortunately, there are some great tools that large
data downloads and uploads manageable in a Rails environment. We'll
walk step-by-step through the process of pulling down data from AWS
and pushing it to a database on a Heroku application, and also discuss
how rake tasks, Net::HTTP, and the Heroku job scheduler can make life
easier.

Mark Siemers - "The Magic of Crystal: Why every Rubyist should
consider picking up the Crystal language."

A walk through the crystal language and the amber framework,
highlighting how easy it is to learn - coming from Ruby. The benefits
of the language will also be covered - speed, compile-time static type
checking, and method overloading.

LIGHTNING TALKS:

Vincent Eng - "Memory Bloat: A True Story"

A follow up to last month's featured talk by Tales Chaves. Details of
a real scenario encountered on the Instant Ink team involving memory
bloat, and an overview of what tools we used to find it and how we
fixed it.

Krista Morrison - "One Year In"

Lessons learned by a coding newbie and boot camp grad after one year on the job.

We're always open for people to share lightning talks. Feel free to
sign up here: http://bit.ly/1Nsq9g8 (Google Form). Lightning talks are
5 minutes and a great chance to dip your toes in if you've always
wanted to talk at SDRuby, but haven't had the chance to yet.

RAFFLE

We'll be giving away a few ebooks, software licenses, etc, using our
super fun Rafflr!

AFTER PARTY

After the meeting, we'll head out for a round or two of drinks at Half
Door Brewing Company, sponsored by ZEAL!
