Re: [AI] Files not visible

2007-12-05 Thread Balaram
Dear friends,
adding on the joke,
if not today tomorrow, Microsoft can really become murda.
Ubuntu and the bundled screen reader orca is making good progress and are on
their way to really threatening Windows and the screen readers.
The problem that I have faced on Ubuntu and orca is brousing internet.
The most positive aspect of Ubuntu is that, we don't have to depend anybody
to install it and we don't have to search for motherboard drivers to enhance
audio and video performance. Indeed, it has to make progress on scanning and
sound editing.
Though, there are more than useful software packages to fulfil these needs,
accessability is a problem at least for now.
So, if we try to get in terms with ubuntu and orca, I don't think, it will
take too long to throw away the ever bug producing and virus vulnerable
windows.
Dear folks, here, I would like to know how much of you have tasted Ubuntu
and orca.
Important!
I am not writing these words to offend any ideologies or to fume any
argumentative debate on the list.

Re: [AI] Files not visible

2007-12-05 Thread Syed Imran
Hi my dear friend

I hurd these operating systems like Linux and Unix are so powerful that they
even crash the hardware if not they are operated carefully, or they consume
the system resources very big time?
You know that i'm not against you, but I just intend to get this clarified.
One of our good gentlemen like you, had posted a link on the list to
download GNOME linux operating system. He told us that the operating system
itself is equipped with an "In-built" ORCA screenreader, and there's nothing
further to be done, than just inserting the GNOME Linux CD while the system
boots up. I did this in my laptop, but I didn't have the fortune of getting
to hear its speech output while the system was booting in "Linux mode".
Finally I started the GNOME linux taking one of my sighted folk's
assistance, but when we activated ORCA, it didn't speak. But I'm still
willing to carry on my Linux experiments, although I'm worried about the
problems my system has to undergo.
Do let me know your experiences with Linux if you are using it.

With best regards
Syed Imran

China marks Int´l Day for Disabled

Source: CCTV.com | 12-04-2007 08:44
Monday was the 16th International Day for Disabled Persons, and to mark
the occasion a variety of activities were carried out across the country
to help the physically challenged.

The theme of this year's International Day for Disabled Persons is
"Decent Work for Persons with Disabilities". Special job fairs were held
in Tianjin, Fujian, and Henan. A fair in Tianjin attracted over three
hundred disabled people on Monday alone. More than 160 jobs were on
offer, including positions for secretaries, accountants and technicians.
At least 40 applicants have signed contracts with the employers.

The disabled people's federation in Fujian held a special sports
meeting. More than 450 disabled people and 200 volunteers participated.

Guide dog trainers from China and Japan got together in Shanghai to
exchange their experiences. Organizers offered the visually impaired a
chance to apply to use the services of the guide dogs.

[AI] UN: Stop Disabled Job Discrimination

2007-12-05 Thread Pradeep banakar
UN: Stop Disabled Job Discrimination
By EDITH M. LEDERER 12.04.07, 12:35 PM ET

The 20 Most Important Questions In Business
Most Worker Friendly Nations
Most Expensive Places To Buy Gas in the U.S.
Greediest Cities in the U.S.

UNITED NATIONS -

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for an end to the "deplorable" job
discrimination against millions of disabled people around the world.

In a message Monday on the International Day of Disabled Persons, Ban said
estimates show that at least half of all disabled people in developed nations,
and the vast majority of those in developing countries are unemployed.

Most others are under-employed, "or will never have full access to the labor
market," he said.

"This situation is deplorable," the secretary-general said. "Persons with
disabilities have the ability to make valuable contributions in the workforce
as employees, entrepreneurs and employers. But they face numerous barriers that
prevent them from fulfilling their potential."

Ban cited difficulties for the disabled in getting an education and learning
skills that would be useful in the job market, fears and prejudices about their
abilities, as well as inaccessible workplaces, and explicit and implict
discriminatory legislation and practices.

Last December, the U.N. General Assembly adopted a new convention enshrining
the rights of the world's disabled. Approval of the 32-page convention
culminated
a campaign spearheaded by disability rights activists and the governments of
New Zealand, Ecuador and Mexico.

According to the latest U.N. figures, about 10 percent of the world's
population, or 650 million people, live with a disability and the number is
increasing
with population growth. The disabled constitute the world's largest minority,
and 80 percent live in developing countries, many in poverty.

Ban noted that the convention, which has been ratified by 10 countries and is
expected to enter into force early next year, recognized the rights of the
disabled to work and be employed on an equal basis with others.

Chris Sullivan, a vice president of Merrill Lynch (nyse:
MER -
news -
people )
who was born hearing impaired, told a news conference he is program manager for
the company's Special Needs Financial Services Group, which he called "the
only program offered by a full service financial firm to serve the special
needs market."

"It is a profitable enterprise," he said.

Sullivan said global employers are projecting a shortage of 31 million skilled
workers by 2010 and 56 million by 2020.

"Against that backdrop, more than 65 percent of the people with disabilities in
the U.S. are unemployed," he said, urging more companies to bring the disabled
into the workforce.

Judy Young, vice president of the National Business and Disability Conference,
said people will disabilities "have significantly increased their visibility
in the past 20 years."

"The next couple of years will be especially ripe for turning the tide and
improving the employments situation of people with disabilities around the world
as many developed countries will experience tighter labor markets as a result
of the aging population," she said.

"Higher life expectance and falling birth rates in these countries will force
businesses to become more creative in filling job vacancies and to take a
look at underutilized and non-traditional pools of labor and those with
disabilities certainly represent one of the largest untapped, talented and
viable
resources," Young said.

[AI] On laptops and Operating Systems

2007-12-05 Thread Sudhir R (NeSTIT)
Hi folks !

I have been following the various threads on AI dealing with laptops and the
various OSs like Windows Vista, Windows XP, Ubuntu etc and am utterly confused
as to the right choice (if there is something like that) since I am myself
contemplating the purchase of a laptop.

On the one hand, most reputed manufacturers (except Dell) seem to have stopped
shipping XP-based machines, while Vista is a real pain from what Vetri and Syed
have been reporting and I discovered myself. Ubuntu seems to be good from the
point of view of immunity from malware though I am not too sure whether we have
a good eco-system to support us like a large community of blind users,
applications for use in a business environment etc. We cannot take political
decisions on matters of OS, you know, just because Open Source is the latest
fad and we all love to hate Bill Gates. (smile)

What about iMacs, laptops running Mac OSX, which, I understand, is a Linux
variant and equally immune from malware. I remember reading somewhere that Mac
OSX comes bundled with a screen reader, and, since it is a proprietory product,
getting support from the company will be easy. The only remaining question is
whether we have a community of blind Mac users (either in India or abroad) to
pose queries to, as we do in AI ?

Pl share your views and experiences on iMac, Mac OSX, the bundled screen reader
and the eco-system. Would request someone like Vetri, who is in the Apple
country and purchased a laptop recently, to tell us why he opted for one
running Bill's latest (still-born ?) baby ?

Thanks and rgds

[AI] IBM Bid for Accessibility for Disabled

2007-12-05 Thread vishnu ramchandani
IBM Bid for Accessibility for Disabled

"Human Ability and Accessibility Center" has been
inaugurated in the country by IBM India.

Its mission statement being to make information and
technology easily accessible to people with visual,
cognitive, hearing, and motor disabilities. And
in the event, possibly drawing upon an untapped
resource -- namely, differently-abled people who might
otherwise be able to make some contribution to the
overall quality of life.

Located out of the India Research Lab in New Delhi,
the "Human Ability and Accessibility Center" aims at
catering to diverse needs of accessibility
stakeholders,
including government bodies, corporates, academic
institutions, researchers, and NGOs.

The key objectives of the center include: to provide
technology to empower differently-abled people, which
includes people who are at an educational- and
economical- disadvantage; to provide technology to
other companies working towards widening the net of
education and information; and to collaborate with
key government bodies on accessibility-related policy
and standards in the country.

Announcing the initiative, Shanker Annaswamy, managing
director of IBM India & South Asia, said, "India faces
a growing need for inclusive development
that fundamentally depends on addressing social,
economic, and physical disadvantages, and creating
opportunities for every individual to realize the
fullest
potential".

"Globally and in India, IBM champions accessibility
needs by bringing technologies and innovations that
empower the differently-abled and the socially
disadvantaged through initiatives such as these."

The center will deploy some innovative solutions
developed by IBM Research; including Easy Web Browsing
for the visually impaired, WebAdopt2Me for people
with cognitive impairments or low vision, IBM
aDesigner, a disability simulator, Hindi Speech
recognition, and Sensei, an English assessment tool,
to facilitate
human capability so that everyone can maximize their
potential, regardless of ability or disability.

Meanwhile, the meaning of accessibility is to enable
IT hardware, software, and services so that they can
be used by more people, either directly, or in
combination with assistive technologies.

[AI] Now, surf the Net free-of-cost at kiosks

Now, surf the Net free-of-cost at kiosks

NOVEL CONCEPT

Virendra Pandit

Ahmedabad, Nov. 30 For the first time in India, the
Ahmedabad-based NETHOTZONE has joined hands with
US-based Ahem! Management Solutions to set up kiosks
providing free Internet facility in 155 cities and
towns of the country. NETHOTZONE is investing Rs 165
crore over the next five years to set up these
kiosks at public places and expects revenues to the
tune of Rs 255 crore, Mr Chetan Ingole, Chief
Operating Officer, told Business Line here today.

The company has also applied for patenting the
software and the concept. Its revenue model is based
on online and offline advertisements. Each kiosk will
have 19-inch LCD monitors and high-speed Internet
access, with support staff. The outlay of the concept
would be borne by the companies looking to reach
out to the Internet surfers.

Ahem! Management Solutions is a San Francisco-based
software firm specialising in developing Internet
traffic controlling software through wireless network.
The concept has been tested at a college here for 45
days. The NETHOTZONE portal is designed to promote
local content’s global reach. The content of the
Web site will be completely user-driven, Mr Ingole
said.

With the mottos of “Freedom of Knowledge” and “Let the
Web be free”, NETHOTZONE is setting up two kiosks in
Ahmedabad in the next two weeks, followed by
those in Vadodara, Rajkot and Surat. These kiosks are
being set up at malls, colleges and other public
places, Mr Ravin Vyas, CEO and promoter of the
company,
earlier told presspersons.

Along with the free Internet accessibility through
kiosks, the NETHOT user will also have access to
discount coupons and other deals of various brands.

[AI] Visually-impaired to become RJs

Visually-impaired to become RJs

Dehra Dun: They may not be able to see, but they have
the gift-of-the-gab. And they may soon bring you all
the gossip, fun and music on your radio
sets.

For a set of visually impaired people, the vision of
life goes much beyond just being able to see as they
gear up for a career in ‘Radio Jockeying’, thanks
to a course by National Institute for Visually
Handicapped (NIVH).

“With the mushrooming of FM radios across thecountry,
opportunities for blind people have increased,” said
Anuradha Mohit, the director of NIVH, who is
also blind.

“These people can also work as radio jockeys and in
broadcasting networks for which the centre will start
a broad-based course. Already the Chennai centre
of NIVH is providing a short-term course for enhancing
RJ skills”, she said.

A similar course would commence shortly expecting to
train over 100 people, she said. Besides, NIVH is
planning to set up a new radio station.

[AI] Betting on eXPerience over a vast Vista

2007-12-05 Thread Rajesh Asudani
Betting on eXPerience over a vast Vista

- PHOTO: AP

ONE YEAR LATER: The ?rst anniversary of the launch of Microsoft's ?agship
operating system is in many ways a curious affair.

Last week marked one year since the release of Vista, the newest Windows
version, for the business user. The consumer edition became available from end
January 2007. The ?rst anniversary of the launch of Microsoft's ?agship
operating system is in many ways a curious affair.

Lack of enthusiasm

Nearly 90 million copies are said to have been sold, of all editions combined -
and clearly this does not represent peanuts. So why are the cheers so muted;
the lack of enthusiasm, so palpable?

Industry watcher Gartner couches its comments diplomatically: "The uptake of
Vista in the PC installed base is taking longer than previously expected."

Others are more blunt: Many of the improvements that Vista offered over earlier
versions - like the Aero interface that used 3-D-like imagery to making
the desktop experience better - was icing on the cake.

Great to have, provided the cake itself was perceived to be solid value for
money. Unfortunately, Vista required many users to make costly hardware upgrades
to their PCs before they could experience the new look-and-feel.

If they did not, they were left with Vista without the bells-and-whistles and
asked, with some reason, "Why should I pay for this?"

That was not all; Unlike earlier releases of Windows from Win 3.1, all the way
through Windows 95 and Windows Me, Microsoft did not ( or could not) ensure
that at the time of Vista's release, the entire ecosystem that makes for a
smooth transition in the operating system, was in position.

Thousands of lay users were annoyed to ?nd that Vista did not work with their
printers and scanners and CD or DVD players - even models that were quite
new. They no longer had a choice of peripherals to choose from. Deciding to
move to Vista effectively locked them into a small number of options - devices
that proclaimed that they were `Vista ready.'

Exaggerated claim

This claim often turned out to be exaggerated: the peripherals needed tweaking
by a professional before they could be made to mate with a Vista PC.

Less than a year after the launch of the consumer editions of Vista, Microsoft
is having to release the ?rst Service Pack or SP1, currently in a beta release
for professional testers.

It had originally planned to enforce a halt to the sale of the earlier Windows
XP version from January 31 2008. But the reluctance of many users, both
corporate
and consumer, to upgrade to Vista and the negative feedback it received from
its resellers and PC assemblers, has forced the company to allow XP to be
preloaded on PCs till June 30 2008 - and for the XP Starter Edition being sold
in emerging markets like India, to be loaded on machines till June 2010.

Piquant situation

With XP slated to be around for some more time to come, it had to be supported
- so Microsoft has also released( in beta) the third Service Pack - SP3 -
for Windows XP. Now here is a piquant situation!

The technology media has widely reported an interesting benchmarking test
carried out by researchers at a Florida (U.S.)-based software company, Devil
Mountain
Software.

They pitted XP with SP3 against Vista with SP1 in a standard test and found
that XP easily outperformed Vista, taking 35 seconds to Vista's 80.

Granted, these are tests with beta versions of the service packs and possibly
not an indication of how things will perform when the ?nal versions are
released;
granted this is one test by one company and it is always dif?cult to judge
which benchmark to use... yet many are ready to read a message into this news.

For lay consumers agonising, Hamlet-like : To be or not to be, a Vista user,
the message is: "Let's not rush; let's stick with XP as long as we can."

And Microsoft seemingly finds itself in the unusual situation of a new product
facing stiff competition from its own earlier version. Among business users,
the situation is more hazy: Last week, an analyst ?rm, King Research, found
that an overwhelming 90 per cent of IT personnel polled, have some concerns
about Vista and nearly half have considered a non-Windows option.

However, another analyst, Forrester has suggested that use of non-Windows
systems like Linux, was still minuscule - and at least half of the corporate
world
planned to switch to Vista sometime in 2008.

Agonised questions

Meanwhile, guidance counsellors at tech sites are addressing agonised questions
from ordinary PC owners, like: "How do I downgrade from Windows Vista to
XP?" (posted at C/ net) and "I had a desktop and laptop both running Windows
XP. Life was good. When I went shopping for a new laptop, I was told that
(it) came with Vista and I could not have it with XP. Is this true?" (posted in
the San Francisco Chronicle).

Such users are being told: Microsoft designs software to be backward compatible
- you can upgr

[AI] new device for home based internet entertainment

2007-12-05 Thread Rajesh Asudani
HYDERABAD: IN a breakthrough that can make internet-based home entertainment
more affordable, a Hyderabad-based company has developed a technology to deliver
web-based services through a single integrated device. The new device, called
"@Box", is reckoned as an affordable replacement for home entertainment Personal
Computer. It is the result of an innovative research by engineers at IChips
India Limited which has filed a patent for it.

At present, users have different devices like TV, phone and computer for
accessing different services. With the new device, one can integrate these
devices
and can access web services on TV or entertainment services on computer. The
new hybrid device, offering internet-based entertainment, education and
communication
services, comes with a remote keyboard, mouse and joystick interfaces. Users
can also access 3D game, videoconferencing, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV)
and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIp) services with the device.to be priced
at just 100 US dollar per device, it can help in dramatically increasing
internet penetration in the country, the Chairman and Managing Director of the
company K A Padmanabham said. The company plans to start commercial production
of the new low-cost device by March next year and deploy it in a million
households within one year. It is also looking at partnering with telecom and
broadband service providers including BSNL, MTNL and Bharti for launching
service like IPTV and VoIP. "Unlike a PC, it is east to operate. The hardware,
operating system and the software are developed by our company," Padmanabham
said. The company has filed four patents for the technology and has invested
about Rs 10 crore for developing the technology. "We are in talks with
manufacturers in South Korea, Thailand and China for manufacturing the device.
We
are also looking at the possibility of manufacturing it in India,'' the
company's Chief Technology Officer Kota Bhaskar. The @Box has the capability of
being configured as an IPTV/satellite set-top-box with a few optional
accessories.

Re: [AI] On laptops and Operating Systems

2007-12-05 Thread Aruni Sharma
Of what little I have experienced on a mac machine, I can say that the
screen reader for mac that you are refering to is the lowest in terms
of accessibility. Ubuntu and orca are good and I have spoken about the
difficulties in my previous mail to the list.
Thanks
