AICB CELEBRATES THE 70TH BIRTHDAY OF MR. J.L.
KAUL

Dear friends,

With immense joy and cheer we take pleasure in sharing with you an
important moment in the life of AICB. Today, Monday, 28th July, 2014,
the beloved leader of thousands of visually impaired persons and our
founder Secretary General, Mr. J.L. Kaul is turning 70.
As is well known, for more than 47 years, Mr. Kaul's personal life has
been synonymous with his complete commitment and dedication to the
work for the blind. With only nine other persons and a meager three
hundred rupees (less than five dollars in today's context) with him,
Mr. Kaul had the indomitable spirit to form a national organization of
the Blind, namely, the All India Confederation of the Blind. Today
AICB is a widely acknowledged name both nationally and internationally
owing to Mr. Kaul's single minded devotion and hard work. The efforts
of this unique man, who is in office for ten hours a day 365 days a
year without taking any benefit or
honorarium from AICB, have been recognized the world over. Among
several distinctions with which Mr. Kaul has been honoured are the
first Marga Schulze International Award in the year 2006 and the Louis
Braille Medal (the highest international distinction conferred on a
person committed to work for the blind) by the World Blind Union in
2012. Recognizing Mr. Kaul's commitment and contribution to the work
for the blind and the difference he has made to the growth of social
sector in India, the Government of India honoured him with Padamshri
this year. Such national recognitions are accorded only to a handful
of individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the country.
The honour was conferred on Mr. Kaul by the President of India in a
grand State Function on 31st March, 2014.

AICB celebrates Mr. Kaul's 70th birthday today at 2.30 pm in-house
in a simple manner.
As Mr. Kaul cuts the cake that day, he would no doubt remember all
those who have stood by him and AICB in moments of both tribulations
and triumphs. We are sure you will join us in your thoughts in wishing
Mr. Kaul a long and happy life.

With gratitude for your continued support,

Sincerely Yours,

AICB Family.

Re: [AI] Insulted by a university teacher, blind attempted suicide

2014-07-28 Thread Lilly
I agree with this one. Many are being stubborn with their native language and
not showing interest in learning other languages. I surely say that's a foolish
practice. Take your native language as your first language and respect it as
you like. On the other hand, the more languages you learn, the more
opportunities you can get internationally. As per English, it is the only
instrument we can use all over the globe to communicate with. So I recommend
each and everyone should learn English to speak and write fluently without any
mistake. It may take time for some. But I'ts not hard. I found there are many
blind people mainly in south India are very weak in English. It may also
because of not having a good institution to teach them. I wish the government
will give option to study in English medium as well. In blind schools.

Why do we have to say, this is good or this is bad? There are so many things
and ways around, there are so many people who have achieved great things and
all in different ways and different means! I think the thing is that whatever
we do, should be done with excellence in mind! No one can do everything or
have everything! So let us see what is best for each one of us and make our
choices accordingly. Yes, English is a language which is used all the time and
we do need it to make it in todays world. I am having great difficulty with
finding employment for people. Disabled / non disabled, because their English
communication is not what it is expected! Currently, we cannot change the world
around with a vave of a magic wand, so one must try to see what your
requirements are, what your dreams are and what do we want for ourselves. After
you can decide weather or not you want to embrace English.

People might not like this but I believe that English is as much an Indian
language now as any other. Many of our generation have grown up learning
English alongside our own mother tongues. Let me also tell you that many of us
would not be able to communicate with each other on this group if English
wasn't around. English is the link language and there is nothing wrong in
learning it.

What do you mean, aren't english medium schools part of India?
They are as much an integral part of our society as the other schools are.
And yes, lot of students from NAB go to government schools as well.
Many of them don't reside in hostel.
And lastly, instead of removing english medium schools from the
picture, our focus should be on how to learn so many good things from
them.
Teachers are there in government schools, and they are in private
schools also. Then why is it that the teachers of private schools
adapt to the needs of the disabled children and the teachers of
government schools don't?
Its all a matter of awareness.
If there is awareness in private schools, then we should better learn
from them instead of treating them like alians.

AICB CELEBRATES THE 70TH BIRTHDAY OF MR. J.L.

The efforts
of this unique man, who is in office for ten hours a day 365 days a
year without taking any benefit or honorarium from AICB, have been
recognized the world over. Among several distinctions with which Mr.
Kaul has been honoured are the first Marga Schulze International Award
in the year 2006 and the Louis Braille Medal (the highest
international distinction conferred on a person committed to work for
the blind) by the World Blind Union in 2012. Recognizing Mr. Kaul's
commitment and contribution to the work for the blind and the
difference he has made to the growth of social sector in India, the
Government of India honoured him with Padamshri this year. Such
national recognitions are accorded only to a handful of individuals
who have made exemplary contributions to the country.

[AI] Want to know A good Mathematics book for screenreaders

2014-07-28 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafel
Hey listers I have been studying Mathematics by R.S. Agarwala, but it
has been written too short, i.e. the methods and formulas have not
been explained comprehensively. Studying mathematics with the help of
screenreader needs explainatory language.
Can anybody suggest any good book where most of the things have been
described with the help of theories rather than in formulas only. I am
looking mathematics book for different competitive exams such as CSAT
and aptitude etc.

AICB CELEBRATES THE 70TH BIRTHDAY OF MR. J.L.
  KAUL

  Dear friends,

With immense joy and cheer we take pleasure in
 sharing with you an
important moment in the life of AICB.  Today,
 Monday, 28th July, 2014,
the beloved leader of thousands of visually
 impaired persons and our
founder Secretary General, Mr. J.L. Kaul is
 turning  70.
As is well known, for more than 47 years, Mr.
 Kaul's personal life has
been synonymous with his complete commitment and
 dedication to the
work for the blind. With only nine other persons
 and a meager three
hundred rupees (less than five dollars in today's
 context) with him,
Mr. Kaul had the indomitable spirit to form a
 national organization of
the Blind, namely, the All India Confederation of
 the Blind. Today
AICB is a widely acknowledged name both nationally
 and internationally
owing to Mr. Kaul's single minded devotion and hard
 work. The efforts
of this unique man, who is in office for ten hours
 a day 365 days a
year without taking any benefit or
honorarium from AICB, have been recognized the
 world over. Among
several distinctions with which Mr. Kaul has been
 honoured are the
first Marga Schulze International Award in the year
 2006 and the Louis
  Braille Medal (the highest international
 distinction conferred on a
person committed to work for the blind) by the
 World Blind Union in
2012. Recognizing Mr. Kaul's commitment and
 contribution to the work
for the blind and the difference he has made to the
 growth of social
sector in India, the Government of India honoured
 him with Padamshri
this year. Such national recognitions are accorded
 only to a handful
of individuals who have made exemplary
 contributions to the country.
The honour was conferred on Mr. Kaul by the
 President of India in a
grand State Function on 31st March, 2014.

AICB celebrates Mr. Kaul's 70th birthday
 today   at 2.30 pm in-house

As Mr. Kaul cuts the cake that day, he would no
 doubt remember all
those who have stood by him and AICB in moments of
 both tribulations
and triumphs. We are sure you will join us in your
 thoughts in wishing
Mr. Kaul a long and happy life.

With gratitude for your continued support,

Subject: [AI] 70TH BIRTHDAY OF MR. J.L. KAUL

2014-07-28 Thread Dr.B.S.M.Kumar

There are quite a number of low vision aids available for people with
low vision. One of them is ALADIN VIDEO MAGNIFIER , manufactured by
TELESONSORY [www.telesonsory.com}. It is a table top model .It will

ten years for all my reading and writing purpose. In addition, there
are a few hand held video magnifiers, also, available which can be

[AI] A metro ride turns into a nightmare

2014-07-28 Thread Vikas Kapoor
A metro ride turns into a nightmare
 Bindu Shajan Perappadan
Dr. Satendra Singh, a polio survivor and assistant professor of Physiology at
the University College of Medical Sciences and Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital was in
for a rude shock when he decided to take a ride in the Delhi Metro.

The doctor, who was travelling from the Vaishali metro station to Rohini East
this past Sunday, first found that reserved parking for differently-abled
persons at Vaishali was occupied by cars which did not have the right to park
there.

His ordeal, however, had just begun. After getting into a rather crowded metro,
the doctor was forced to stand throughout his journey to the Kashmere Gate
metro station (where he had to change his train) because none of his
co-passengers got up to offer him the seat reserved for differently-abled
persons.

At Kashmere Gate, I decided to ask for and use a wheelchair as my journey was
long and I was already exhausted. I approached the metro staff at the counter
with my request and was given a wheel chair with no foot rest. I pointed the
obvious lapse to the supervisor at the counter telling him that the wheelchair
cannot be used as my feet would drag on the ground. After complaining the wheel
chair was replaced,'' said the doctor, who is also an RTI activist.

Mr. Singh added that though the supervisor at the metro station did make an
entry about the use of a wheel chair, no assistance was provided to help him in
registering his protest or suggestion.

While the metro official did note down my phone number, name and destination,
he just turned away when I asked him to help me with registering my complaint
with customer care. I later did call up the metro helpline, which informed me
about the various facilities offered to differently-abled persons on the Delhi
Metro including priority parking close to the station, said Dr. Singh.

Demanding a more hands-on approach to help differently-abled persons travel
with ease, Dr. Singh said: Adequate parking facilities, help by the general
public to give reserved seats, proper maintenance of wheel chairs and prompt
registration and redress of complaints would go a long way in ensuring a
stress-free travel. This should be provided as a matter of right to
differently-abled persons travelling on the Metro.

The polio survivor was forced to stand throughout his journey to the Kashmere
Gate metro station because none of his co-passengers got up to offer him the
seat reserved for the differently-abled
