Backup & Restore time

2001-06-06 Thread Praveen Kumar

Hi all,

I configured TSM 4.1 and TDP for SAP R/3 2.7 on a SUN Solaris system.

Our setup is as follows.

Solaris 7 OS, SAP R/3 4.0B and Oracle 8.0.6 database for SAP.
IBM Magstar 3570 tapeloader with single drive.

I successfully configured TSM 4.1 and TDP for SAP R/3 2.7. We are taking SAP
online/offline backup using SAP brbackup utility. While taking
online/offline backup, tapeloader backs up at the rate of 45GB per hour. (I
enabled RL_COMPRESSION parameter. Means it is set to YES. I have not enabled
the TSM client compression). It is also restoring at the same speed. I can
restore 45GB per hour. For restoration we are using SAP brrestore utility.

My problem is if i take the file system level backup using TSM (dsmc
utility), my backup speed reduces to 30GB per hour and restoration speed
reduces to 22GB per hour. I am taking full filesystem backup not incremental
backups. With the same settings SAP online/offline backup and restore speed
is 45GB per hr. Any tips to improve the filesystem level backup/restore
speed.

All suggestions are most welcome.

Regards

Praveen Kumar

Rather than using DRIVE for the format type in the devclass, try use ULTRIUM.

On the move drmedia command, use the remove=BULK operand if you want to use
all 20 slots of the library.

Sorry - I hit send before finishing the post I have seen this
work on an STK L700 library if you use the REMOVE=BULK operand. I can check
our library configuration to see if there is something special you need to
set to make this work correctly.

why ther restore crash whit this error? The TSM is OK, the comunication

Ejecting tapes from StorageTek L700 tape Library

2001-06-06 Thread Chuck Lam

I am trying to get StorageTek L700 tape library to
work on a newly configured TSM4.1 running on AIX4.3.3.

In the morning, I backup the tapepool to a copypool
called drmpool. As the result, I have a few tapes
sitting in the 'drmpool' every morning. My intention
is to eject those tapes to the 20-slot I/O ports in
one command and send them offsite for DR purpose.
Using the 'move drmedia' command, no matter what
'remove' option I tried, I could only eject one tape
to top most slot, as if TSM does not know about other
19 slots. Did I miss something in configuring the
Tape Library?
Are there any ways to eject those tape in one command?

TIA

Re: Primary tape has errors

2001-06-06 Thread Hagan, Patrick L

Bob,

If all your backup tapes are marked as offsite, then yes this is the only
tape you will need. If you have tapes in your stacker that isn't marked
offsite yet, then it may or may not need one or more of those. I think it
only will list the tapes needed that is marked offsite or unavailable.

When you check your offsite tape in you will need to update it read-only.

Hi all.

A while ago I reported this problem. Its fixed now and I thought I'd pass
on what the fix was.

"Bob Bennett from Tivoli has rung back with a fix for our TCP/IP protocol
error problem. He said this fix is mentioned in the 3.7 manuals but not
before.

In /etc/inittab we are starting the scheduler with:
dsmc::once:/usr/bin/dsmc sched   # ADSM
scheduler

When any output comes from the scheduler the TCP/IP protocol error is
produced...

The fix is to start the scheduler with:
dsmc::once:/usr/bin/dsmc sched > /dev/null 2>&1# TSM scheduler

Apparently you MUST pipe the output to /dev/null."

Cheers.

Hi all.

Running ADSM 3.1.2.50 on Solaris 2.6, client is 3.1.0.8.

We are getting these errors quite frequently in the dsmerror.log. They
happen every 5 seconds for a few hours then taper off to every 20 minutes.

08/01/2000 03:19:39 TcpRead(): recv(): errno = 131
08/01/2000 03:19:39 sessRecvVerb: Error -50 from call to 'readRtn'.

-50
08/01/2000 03:19:39 ANS1017E Session rejected: TCP/IP connection failure

A bounce of the client dsmc sched task seems to set it all right again, but
often this cannot be done until we arrive at work in the morning (no 7x24
monitoring). Which is too late to complete overnight backups,
unfortunately.

I have asked our LAN/network guys to look into why it might be occurring,
and they will be getting back to me soon I hope.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so what was the cause/solution?

Thanks in advance.

Marc,

The same situation happens in Windows NT 4.0. A quick fix would be to
change the CommTimeOut to 3,600 seconds and IdleTimeOut to 60 Minutes. That
would ensure that you do not receive a timeout error.

As far as understanding what that error means, at a command prompt enter
help followed by the numerical value of the ANR message that might explain a
little more detail in solving the problem.

Example: "Help 1809" for error ANR1809E

HP and SAN

2001-06-06 Thread Alexandre Bicas

Hi guys !

Does anyone know if TSM server for HP-UX is supported in a SAN environent ?

A customer needs to connect fiber channel tapes in a HP box, and wishes to
use TSM in order to manage the backups.

If it's not supported, does anyone inside Tivoli know when it will be ?!

Thanks all !

Re: Schedule clients for backup

2001-06-06 Thread Del Hoobler

Patrick,

Each Domino server will have its own version
of the command file. The command file filename will be
the same so that you only need one TSM Server schedule
that defines the "Domino" schedule parameters, part of
which is the filename of the command file to kick off.
Then, you will just associate the nodenames
(that you set up for the TDP for Domino clients)
with that schedule. The User's Guide covers this
in more detail. The key is that you only need to
do the "TSM Server" setup once and then you will
set up each Domino server that you want backed up.

Thanks,

Del

Hello Everyone

I am configuring one TSM server to backup three Lotus Domino servers.
I would like to do so with schedules. I understand I need to have
domsel.cmd (command files) to run scheduled backups. My question is on the
other servers (without TSM server but just the TDP for Domino client) I
have the TSM scheduler running and the nodes are registered on the server,
do they use the servers command file or does each one require a separate
cmd file with the /ADSMNODE=othersevername on the server? I guess I'm
missing how the clients call the cmd file and where they must reside. I do
have a local client on the server working but the others don't appear to
be. Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

Re: TSM on OS/390 and SQL Question.

2001-06-06 Thread Alan Davenport

It's as simple as NOT putting spaces next to the ">" and "<" signs. I use
this script to count the amount of tapes eligible for reclamation:

select count(volume_name) as carts from volumes where pct_reclaim>60 and
stgpool_name='TAPEPOOL'

If I were to have a space next to the ">" it will not work but by running it
together it does!

Multiple Sessions for Netware backups

2001-06-06 Thread Denis L'Huillier

Don't laugh
I am trying to set up a backup schedule for a Netware server. I will be
backing up approx 500 Gig once a week.
Why 500 gig? Our lotus notes storage is out of control. As a fix (yea
right) the notes admins are going to make
everyone do local archives of their mail to their share drive. Yes.. there
moving the problem from one platform to
another. Brilliant minds. Regardless.. I have to back this server up once
a week.. I want to create multiple backup
scheduled sessions each with separate option files. For example: optfile 1
: incl [a-p].nsf excl *.nsf and optfile2 :
incl [q-z].nsf excl *.nsf.. This way I can hopefully make my backup
window.. I will probably set up 6 schedules. So
my question is how can I use the TSM Server scheduler to start multiple
scheduled operations each looking at different
option files ( or different inclexcludes). I may even spread the backup
across 2 TSM servers.
Any feedback would be much appreciated..

Re: Multiple Sessions for Netware backups

2001-06-06 Thread MC Matt Cooper (2838)

You may want to put your INCLUDE/EXCLUDE lists, 6 of them, in CLIENTOPTION
sets. Then write a server script that will associate and dis-associate the
desired node before/after the scheduled backups. I realize that you are now
synchronizing the server schedules and client schedules but it should work.
I do a synchronized duel schedule to control when my FULL
(copymode=absolute) and INCREMENTAL (copymode=modified) are run.

Eric,

I have a customer that was in a similar situation, and if his experience is a
typical one then all I can say is good luck!

It took almost two months and countless phone calls/emails to get the correct
version for his Exchange 2000 server. If you'd like I can put you in touch with
him.

The problem seemed to be that Tivoli sales had trouble verifying his original
license, or something of that nature.

Re: Schedule clients for backup

2001-06-06 Thread Lindsay Morris

It's bit Rube-Goldbergish:
You have a Domino client node, with a script that will back it up sitting on
the client.
What happens is:
-you make sure dsmc sched is running on that (ie the normal file-system
client)
-you make a TSM server schedule with action=command, object=that client
script
and the TSM server fires up the schedule,
dsmc sched gets contacted,
dsmc sched runs the client script for you.

Be aware dsmc is not very good about reporting errors if it gets them.
The error code will probably be in the dsmsched.log file, but "query events"
will probably say things are fine even if it failed.

Can you do a "tapeutil -f /dev/rmt0 inquiry" ? (i.e. can you see it

Has it worked before?

If it hasn't, can you send the library/devclass/drive defs.

Subject: Multiple Sessions for Netware backups

Don't laugh
I am trying to set up a backup schedule for a Netware server. I will be
backing up approx 500 Gig once a week.
Why 500 gig? Our lotus notes storage is out of control. As a fix (yea
right) the notes admins are going to make
everyone do local archives of their mail to their share drive. Yes.. there
moving the problem from one platform to
another. Brilliant minds. Regardless.. I have to back this server up once
a week.. I want to create multiple backup
scheduled sessions each with separate option files. For example: optfile 1
: incl [a-p].nsf excl *.nsf and optfile2 :
incl [q-z].nsf excl *.nsf.. This way I can hopefully make my backup
window.. I will probably set up 6 schedules. So
my question is how can I use the TSM Server scheduler to start multiple
scheduled operations each looking at different
option files ( or different inclexcludes). I may even spread the backup
across 2 TSM servers.
Any feedback would be much appreciated..

Thanks,
Denis L'Huiller

Schedule clients for backup

2001-06-06 Thread Patrick Sheehan

TIA

Patrick

Re: Mac OS X requirements survey

2001-06-06 Thread Michael Oski

The problem with backing up MacOS X files with the Classic client is
that the new file attributes will be lost. MacOS up to version 9.1 store
resources and attributes for file differently then MacOS X. Many of the
files you backup will not restore correctly if the new method of
resource and attribute settings is not supported.

So, if you have users using dual boot setups, then make sure they run on
separate partitions an only backup the MacOS 9.1 "side". The X side, and
all files included with native applications are not reliably restorable.

Guiseppe,

This is the syntax we use on our NetWare clients. We are running TSM 4.1. Remember
that the exclude statements are processed from the bottom up. These statements
exclude most of the system files and logs that don't need to be backed up.I hope
this helps!

Re: Solaris8 & Tape Drivers

2001-06-06 Thread Frost, Dave

Does add_drv lb work?

Check that you are running the Solaris 64 bit kernel using "isainfo -b".
TSM server is not supported at 32 bit on Solaris 7 or 8.

Confirm that the mt and lb binaries agree with your kernel ("file mt" will
tell you if it is 64 bit or 32 bit).

Be warned - if you are using san-attached tapes, this release of the mt
driver is slightly b0rken. You will need the fixtest, or wait until the
june/july release of the server

Hello TSM'ers,

We are attempting to install TSM 4.1 on a Sun Solaris 8 platform.

The Server, License and Device packages install fine, and we can start the
TSM server succesfully.

Our problem occurs when we are trying to install the TSM Tape Drivers for
the DLT8000 Drive and Autochanger 9Slot library.

We have edited the mt.conf and lb.conf files correctly. The Unix midrange
person has succesfully written to the tape in the drive.

When we do the

add_drv command, we get the following error;

devfsadm: driver failed to attach: mt
Warning: Driver succesfully added but failed to attach.

Or similar.

Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks,

2001-06-06 Thread Chibois, Herve

Hi Long,

seems you told TSM to automatically create new DB/LOG volumes when needed.
The partition / filespace you specified for 'automatic expansion' is FULL !

2 tips :

- manually dsmfmt a DB / LOG volume and add them with def dbvol/logvol +
extend db/log
- clean up your FS / drive specified for automatic extension (should be
specified
in dsmserv.opt)

good luck

Mac OS X requirements survey

2001-06-06 Thread Gretchen L. Thiele

>At minimum, a command line dsmc & dsmadmc functionality with support for
>HFS+ and UFS file systems. This way the scheduler could be put in a cron
>entry for nightly processes. Personally, I don't care much about a gui

I pretty much agree with the above, but I *do* care about gui for
most of my users.

The problem may or may not be the new dual boot Macs - we already have
a client for the OS 9.1 side, but need one for the OS X side. Should
they overlap in the files that they back up? Should they exclude
files not distinctly associated with each OS version? The future is
going to be OS X, so most of the development should be focused there.
However, for the duration of this year, most of my users will be
in both worlds and expect to be backed up...

If you could back up and restore files from either OS from one 'side'
(OS X), that would cover it for us. This, of course, introduces a
lot of other issues, but ones I can deal with. Bottom line is a
working client for OS X.

I'm still thinking about this and I am waiting to hear back from our
Mac admins here to see what they would like.

DB errors

2001-06-06 Thread Long Nguyen

Anyone familiar with the following errors?

ANR7860W Insufficient Space Available for file /apps/adsm/db/D6838281.DBV.
ANR4430W Unable to Define Data Base Volume /apps/adsm/db/D6838281.DBV.
ANR4415I Data Base and Recovery Log Space Expansion Completed.
ANR4414I Data Base Space expansion Is Needed, 2360 Megabytes needed.
ANR4412I Data Base and Recovery Log Space expansion triggered.
ANR4428W One or more Data Base Volumes differs in number of copy volumes.

These errors happens a lot when I do a "q act", the last one ANR4428W
repeats more than the others.
Any ideas??

Can you do a "tapeutil -f /dev/rmt0 inquiry" ? (i.e. can you see it from
AIX?)

Has it worked before?

If it hasn't, can you send the library/devclass/drive defs.

Re: errors

2001-06-06 Thread Collins, Brenda

Marc,

We just an identical situation, where the NT clients hung as a result of
losing their network connection. The only difference was that they would
start up again and every time they lost the network connection more sessions
were left hung. By morning, we had numerous sessions hung all for the same
client.

We changed the idletimeout parameter for server options to 30. It was set
at 15 previously. I just made that change last night and this is the first
morning we have not had a problem.

It might be worth a try for you.

Hi,
Has anyone experienced problems 3584 and NT in fibre env?
I have configured my library: one library and 3 drives, fibre attached on a

Everything looks ok, but when I attempt to label a tape, I get either sense

I am doing:

Anyone got a similar env and got it working?

Appreciate any help, anyone could offer!
