Backup issue...

2010-04-13 Thread M KIRAN KUMAR
Hi,

I have a setup of TSM server and client v5.5.

I have configured two management class. one is default and the other is
non-default.

I performed selective backup in non default management class. It was
successful. Two different storage pools for backup for both management
classes.

But when I try to perform incremental on the default management class,
server is trying to mount from both the storage pools from default and
non-default management class.

This is making lot of IO operations and witting to both management class is
happening.

Please suggest how to resolve the issue.

Regards,

Kiran.

I think you have run selective backup for specified list of directories (maybe
with subdir=yes).

If you are running incremental backup without parameters, you need:

1) check dsm.opt file for included domains like C:, D:, SYSTEMSTATE, etc;

2) check include/exclude list for specified domains. It should be
include.backup all domains not default management class for all domains.

In other case, come files will come to default management class.

You can try to add in dsm.opt at the beginning (important!) of include/exclude
list:
INCLUDE *:\...\* NOT_DEFAULT_CLASS
INCLUDE.SYSTEMSTATE ALL NOT_DEFAULT_CLASS
This will fix your problem for sure.

It is not a matter of access. Node can access all management classes in domain
by default and it does not matter how many classes you have. Next is only
important:

1) it should be default management class in domain for backups without include
statements (default);

2) all other management classes can be used ONLY by INCLUDE statements in
dsm.opt.

Hi Timothy,

What do you want to do? Backup Full-VM's (.VMDK files), or do a file backup of
the VM's.

In the Windows Client Guide (6.1/6.2) there is a chapter on how to backup this
using a proxy node. It is not advisable anymore to install a Linux client in
ESX because in the near future the service console of vSphere will be gone as
are the VCB-tools.

We have a Client who has a ESX host (OS: VMWare ESX vSphere 4) running
a form of Red Hat Linux (Linux VM) Can we use the normal Tivoli Linux
Client to back it the physical machine kernal up if so anything special
we need to know especially as for as dsm.opt include/exclude statements?

2.6.18-128.ESX

If anyone can point to some specific documentation or link regarding
this feel free to add.

Thanks in advance!

2010-04-13 Thread Bruce T. Harvey
This is a single LUN from SAN, 16G and the sysback data shows I need a
little less than 4G to restore to. My issue is that it can't find
/usr/lib/instl/libinst_mkworkdir

Many thanks!

When posting a problem like this, include some information on what kind of
client and the type of data, and what you have examined in pursuing the problem.

If this is a Windows client, then you're dealing with the usual situation of
directories going into the mgmtclass having the longest Retonly value,
according to TSM rules as described in the doc, in the absence of a DIRMc
specification. You can see innumerable postings on this in the ADSM-L

Grigori -

Some ways to pursue...

Check the dsmerror.log on the client for possible error indications.

Assure that the TSM server parameters for the client have it going at client
port 1501 for the session, and not some odd port.

From the TSM server system, at an OS prompt, do 'telnet ClientNetname 1501':
When you do Ctrl+], then press Enter to get the telnet prompt, and then
quit, the client dsmerror log should contain like:
04/13/10 07:13:24 sessInit: Starting communications initialization
04/13/10 07:13:24 sessInit: Transitioning: sInit state === sTRANSERR state
This verifies physical connectability from server to client, as in no
firewalling preventing access.

Use the TSM server command 'DEFine CLIENTAction' to perform a test command
which will leave evidence on the client, such as a command to report time of
day, directed to a file. (DEFine CLIENTAction may take a while to kick off, so
give it some time.)

I have an idea about a source of problem.

I have MS SQL database on the same server.

There is dedicated node name and scheduler for SQL database.

So I am running two schedulers and only one CAD service.

Everything was working fine with TSM Client 6.1.3.2, but I have upgraded this
server to 6.2.0.0 recently and started to have this problem.

I have found something strange on server. Command netstat -a gives:

TCPsms-prodsrv:ms-sql-s sms-prodsrv.KUWAIT.AUB.NET:0 LISTENING

TCPsms-prodsrv:1501 sms-prodsrv.KUWAIT.AUB.NET:0 LISTENING

As you see there are two (???) LISTENNING for port 1501.
My minimal knowledge in TCP/IP says it is impossible.
What do you think about it?

Per page http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms734772.aspx and similar doc,
Microsoft has its own, strange version of TCP to do port sharing. Not a fan:
one should not try to fool Mother Nature.

You hadn't mentioned the use of CAD before this; and attempting a mixed
implementation of CAD and Scheduler is unhealthy. I'd suggest following the
standard procedure defined in the client manual, Managing multiple schedule
requirements on one machine, to formulate a clean implementation, which should
avoid odd problems.

TSM Image backup -incremental issue

dsmc backup image e: -mode=incremental

Image full backups work fine .ButI noticed a major issue in image incrementals
..

It never backups any new files in interior directories structures...

eg: If we create some new files in the path

e:\output\ABC\ ,they never get backed up using image incremental .

But if files get created in e:\ or in e:\output , they are being considered in
image incremental backups

Am i missing any option in my Image incremental backup or something ?

Re: Scheduler problem

2010-04-13 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Grigori,

There is nothing wrong with using the CAD to manage the scheduler. In fact,
that is usually our recommended configuration.

Do you have any other 6.2 clients on Windows? If yes, do they experience
the problem?

It would help us to know more about the TSM client configuration for this
machine.

- How many CAD instances are installed, and how many scheduler instances
are installed (you should use one CAD per node, and each unique TSM
application should have its own node).

- Can you show the output from the command dsmcutil list

- For each service identified in the dsmcutil list command, show the
output from dsmcutil query /name:xxx(xxx is a name of the
service identified in the dsmcutil list command output)

- What does the options file for each CAD look like?

- What does the options file for each scheduler look like?

- Check all *.log files for any anomalous errors that could be indicative
of the problem. For example you checked dsmsched.log and dsmerror.log, but
did you check dsierror.log or dsmwebcl.log?

If you still cannot identify the trouble, I recommend opening a PMR.

The TSM client manual for Windows says:
You must create a separate service for each schedule process. If you are using

If you revise your configuration to exactly follow IBM's documentation and

Check your include-exclude list to make sure that the directories or files
are not being excluded. Use dsmc query inclexcl to see the
include-exclude list.

See the client manual (or use dsmc help) for information about the
incrbydate option, which is what -mode=incremental uses. There are a
number of possible reasons that files can be skipped by this form of
incremental backup processing.

You must be logged in with a Windows account that has sufficient Windows

Look in the TSM manual for the Windows client.
For the 5.5 client, chapter 3 (Getting Started) explains the Windows

Snapdiff with NetApp OnTap 7.3.3

2010-04-13 Thread Strand, Neil B.
FYI.
For those who use the TSM client snapdiff functionality to backup
their CIFS shares on a NetApp filer, I have been advised of the
following which affects those who upgrade their NetApp to the latest O/S
- OnTap 7.3.3:

If you have any customers using the snapdiff functionality to backup
CIFS/NFS shares via the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) client please be
advised that when upgrading to ONTAP 7.3.3 the TSM client will cause an
abort with the backup operation complaining about an invalid ONTAP
version. This is not a particular ONTAP version that TSM is complaining
about, it is the fact that the API element has been enhanced with the
FileAccessProtocol. The work-around for this is to have the customer
place an entry ( TESTFLAG SNAPDIFFONTAPFAP ) into the dsm.opt file that
resides on the host. This option will bypass the check that looks for
the enhanced API that supports Unicode. This will be addressed in a
later TSM client version but is needed today for customers moving to
ONTAP 7.3.3.

Re: Backup up ESX Host running Linux using Tivoli

2010-04-13 Thread Timothy Hughes

Hi Richard thanks,

The Client would like a hybrid of that.they want all the ESX Hosts
backed up. Entire server. Also, they would like clients installed on
all the VMs and those backed up (so far, all Windows)

The ESX servers (HOSTs) are very small and would only require a full
backup once a week. For the most part, these servers will not have VMs
(VMDK) files on them. There ESX boxes are full ESX and have a Service
Console which would be the Linux client. Currently 3 servers will need
the linux client installed.

Thanks, for the information regarding the Linux client install on ESX,
I will inform the client not sure if that will make a difference to them
or not .

There is not much to gain for backing up the host... just log files
and executable that could be installed from the esx media. If you are using
VI3, use VCB to backup VMs or installs the TSM client on each VM. If you
are using vSphere 4, install TSM client on each vm or use the new Backup API

Re: Running a report on what files will expire in the next sixty days

2010-04-13 Thread John D. Schneider
Because of TSM's incremental backup scheme, there is no way to know what
files will expire, because their is no way to know what new versions of
files will be taking their place in the future. For example, say there
is a file called yoda.txt. If that yoda.txt file is backed up once and
is never changed, then the backup for it will never expire because the
backup of that file remains the active version of that file. If,
however, yoda.txt is changed from time to time, and a backup runs every
day, then the older versions of the file become inactive versions of
the file. Then the inactive versions will expire when they exceed
either the number of days or versions that you defined in the policy.

So, when I backup yoda.txt today, there is no way to know when this
version of yoda.txt is going to expire, unless I have some way to know
how many new versions are going to replace it in the future.

Can you tell us why you think it is necessary to predict what files will
be expired, or when? Since new backup data will be coming in
continuously, is it really important to know?

LM TSM v5.5.4.2 upgrade fixes tape mount failures w/ v5.5.4 or v5.5.4.1

2010-04-13 Thread James R Owen

If your LibMgr TSM v5.5.4 / v5.5.4.1 is busy, you probably have
APAR IC65967 causing many unnecessary tape mount failures
w/ ANR9730W errors @ LM TSM and ANR1401W errors @ LC TSM.

After being plagued for the last month with these failures
[failing GENerate BackupSets and other long running processes],
we did an emergency v5.5.4.2 upgrade yesterday. Before the upgrade,
we had 100 mounts failing within an hour! Since the upgrade,
we've had only two failed mounts during the last 19 hours.

We like our AIX 6.1 LM TSM v5.5.4.2 (latest patch) upgrade!

Re: Running a report on what files will expire in the next sixty days

2010-04-13 Thread John D. Schneider
Well, I am no expert on this, so I am willing to be corrected by
somebody if I don't have this right, but here is my understanding.

Yes the deactivate_date will tell you when a given backup object became
inactive, but that won't reliably tell you when it will expire, because
as I said, you don't know what other versions will be coming along.
Newer versions can cause it to expire sooner.

What if, in my previous example, yoda.txt is in a management class whose
backup copygroup policy is 7 versions for 30 days? The file gets backed
up on 4/13/2010. The next day yoda.txt changes, so it gets backed up
again on 4/14/2010. So at the next 'expire inventory' the 4/13/2010
version of the file becomes inactive, and deactivate_date gets set to
4/13/2010. If the policy says 30 days, it would be easy to think, yeah,
it is going to really expire on 5/13/2010, 30 days later. But what if
yoda.txt keeps changing every day? Then yoda.txt from 4/13/2010 is going
to expire when 7 new versions have backed up, on 4/20/1010. But what if
yoda.txt only changes every other day, or not at all?

You can do a select to find out all the files that are deactivated, but
the best you could determine is the outside window of how many days they
might still be around, based on the number of days in the policy. But I
am still not sure why it is useful to run such a report?

At the same time, I have two servers, running MS SQL database, with single CAD
service and two schedulers related to dedicated TSM nodes.

I have realized I have problem on the both of them:

1) on the first server, which was reported to ADSM-L, regular backup for
operating system is missed every day, but there is no problem with MS SQL
backup;

2) on the second server, regular backup is running fine, but MS SQL backup is
missed every day.

How many CAD instances are installed, and how many scheduler instances are
installed (you should use one CAD per node, and each unique TSM application
 should have its own node).

Unfortunately, I have only one CAD service and two schedulers (for regular and
TDP nodes). Maybe it is a wrong configuration, but it was used for many years
with TSM Client 5.X, 6.1.0, 6.1.1.X, 6.1.2.X and 6.1.3.X without any problems.
Only after upgrading to 6.2.0.0 we faced problems.

Can you show the output from the command dsmcutil list

Command: 'list'

Command: List Installed TSM Client Services

Machine: SMS-PRODSRV(Local Machine)

Installed TSM Client Services:

   1. TSM Client Acceptor

   2. TSM Client Scheduler MSSQL_SMS-PRODSRV

   3. TSM Client Scheduler SMS-PRODSRV

   4. TSM Journal Service

   5. TSM Remote Client Agent

5 TSM Client Services were located.

For each service identified in the dsmcutil list command, show the output
 from dsmcutil query /name:xxx
