There is a basic problem with the edit in cell concept. Background: I have extensive experience in all worksheet programs. From SuperCalc64, Lotus, Excel, etc. All of them, as Open Office Calc (OOC) does, include an edit line in the task-bar (called formula bar in OOC), to provide space for editing formulas and text included in a cell. It was provided as a means to be able to edit cells that contained data bigger than the actual size of the cell. In the beginning, the cell was edited in place, but never covered other cells, it was limited to the size of the cell itself. That was a problem at the time as editing a long formula while being able to see only a small part of it was quite tricky. Long time ago as well, the idea of an edit bar was incorporated to the spreadsheets to ease the pain with long formulas. It improved with time to allow editing formulas with more than one line. Later, the idea of "editing in cell" was introduced as an improvement. It intended to make easier for users to see what they were editing. It came with an option to disallow it globally, which was available in the edit options. I always choose to disallow it. Now, OOC has "edit in cell" as the only metod available. As I get easily into complex and long formulas, I really need to use the edit bar for what it was created, not this "edit in place" concept that covers the formulas I am trying to edit. Problems it creates: Mainly, the cell contents itself cover the other cells making it, once again, awkward to edit long formulas. Also, if all cells are being edited in place, what's the need for a formula bar? It does help with short text or short formulas, as it is easier to see the changes in place. A possible workaround in OOC: Move the cell to an empty space, where the text/formula of the cell could expand freely. Very annoying to move the cell out to edit, and move it back to where it was. Steps to reproduce: 1.- Open the attached worksheet. 2.- Edit any blue cell (F2, double click, click on the edit bar). 3.- The last referenced cell is blocked by the editing window. Note: I can provide many more "real" examples of how anoying this "feature" is. My desktop has a ATI Radeon 7000 with 32MB memory; running 760MB RAM. However, further testing in PowerPoint (v.2000) resulted in success in all 5 higher resolution settings for two monitors on Monitor 2. OpenOffice did show the presentation on Monitor 2 for the six moderate display settings, then passed 2 of 5 higher resolution settings, as shown above. When I switched the display to Monitor 1, and tested opposites, OpenOffice showed the presentation at 5 of 5 higher resolutions. This occurred only in Impress Presentation, OOo.3, with three different files, opened with two imported .ppt files, and a new .odp file. (Originally I thought there was compatibility issues and resaved/reopened with PowerPoint v.2000.) Change display resolution settings: Windows Display Properties\Settings Tab, etc. 2. Select slide, Start show (Slide Show button or View|Slide Show or F5), Advance slide, Esc. 3. Notate the visibility of the presentation. 4. Repeat steps B.1. thru B.3. for different values of monitor settings. I tested eleven different settings, in order of combined resolution video demand, which resulted in Steps A (Secondary monitor) the Program showed the presentation for the first 8 of 11 tests. As a simple user of barcodes, I wasn't aware of 2D matrix codes and AFAICS these can't be done using fonts, so for me that only leaves graphic generation. For me, generating barcodes at the printer is not an option. As noted, I had moved my temp files. I opened a file just now and it told me the file was locked by another user (me - not really). I let it open as read only and the equations are gone again. I quit OOo. In terminal I renamed .~lock.HW9_solns.odt# in the directory of my file. I restarted OOo and had it open the file again. This time, no lock complaint, but still all the equations and figures are gone. There is only 1 empty folder in the moved temp directory although the directory modification time suggests it still being used. This time as well, OOo has not crashed nor have I force-quit it since I last edited this file (this morning). Suggestions for how to avoid future trouble? In a different machine, I repeated the test and when I tried to open it in Excel 2007, it let me open the file but all I got was garbage. - I did create a simple spread sheet in Excel 2007 without any combo box in it and repeated the test and everything went well. So, it is possible that the macro(s) associated with the combo box in OOo may be causing some problems. - In any case, as far as I am concerned, the bug is now CONFIRMED.
