(clutching at straws) I'm not sure if this is relevant and I don't know how
to test it, but I just came across this...

" I remember once, the magic flag when I have problems with swing apps:
-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true. This works for me. Don't ask me why ... (should be
something with DirectDraw and my ATI card?) "

After poking around in http://rfc.net/rfc2396.html, section B "Parsing a URI
Reference with a Regular Expression", and playing with
http://www.cuneytyilmaz.com/prog/jrx/, I agree this is a special case.
(Note: jrx requires forward slashes escaped) in RE.

Also, I learn in this discussion
(http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/uri/2003Feb/0035.html) that... "there
_must_ be a host field, although the host can be omitted. So, if you're asking
is it 'legal' to write 'file:/e:/xxx.pdf', the answer is no, not
according to RFC 1738, you must write file:///e:/xxx.pdf, which is valid.

...which OOo seems to reflect. I notice also that MSWord uses three slashes for
links with drive letters when saving a htm file. I don't know how the original
submitter created their documents, but in trying to isolate the issue I created
my example using notepad.exe. btw, I had always thought that file://e:/xxx.pdf
was legit, since it worked with Mozilla and IE.

To handle this case, perhaps consider that the "e:" is like "hostname:port" but
with null for "port".

Hi Spyres, I'm a user with this problem, and at the moment I'm stuck. The
problem isn't getting fixed now!, since only so much canbe done about a crash in
a driver without the support of the manufacturer.

I'd like to see your solution :):), and see for myself how it affects my
machine. If its as bad as you say, then OOo on ATI still looks bad, slowing its
uptake. I'm sure the devs want a proper solution too.

Thats cool. Further investigation hasn't revealed anything more. Seems like it
is something historically unique to my system rather than a problem with OOo
itself.

As a final note for future reference, I've found that altering the permissions
on HKCR\.odt so the group Users have Full Control allows the "Select program to
open file" setting to stick, which it wasn't previously.

Well back with my results, and I was feeling a bit of goose until I saw
morganolsson's post, since I couldn't reproduce the problem on fresh installs...
1. Installed fresh WinXP SP1 onto C: drive, then installed OOo2.0.0.
Observed that file associations WERE OKAY for accounts other than the
installer.
2. Installed fresh WinXP SP1 onto D: drive, then installed OOo2.0.0.
Observed that file associations WERE OKAY for accounts other than the
installer.

btw, I have only been concerned with odt files, not MSO files. MSO has never
been on my main machine which has the problem.

However the problem still occurs on my main machine, so I also thought a
previous uninstall might have an impact. I can't remember how I installed
previous versions of of OOo on my main machine, however the following testing
didn't bear fruit:
3. Installed fresh WinXP SP1 onto C:, then installed OOo1.9.118.
Observed file associations WERE set okay for accounts other than installer.
4. Removed 1.9.118. Observed the odt file icon didn't immediately change from
OOo icon to a "nothing" icon.
5. Logged to another account with XP Fast User Switching and back again and it
was odt file was correctly a "nothing" icon.
6. Installed 2.0.0. Observed odt file correctly had OOo icon for installer and
non-installer.

Neither did:
7. Uninstalled 2.0.0. Observed the odt file icon didn't immediately change from
OOo icon to a "nothing" icon.
8. Immediately installed 2.0.0. Observed odt file correctly had OOo icon for
installer and non-installer.

Following on from morganolsson's success, I'll see what I can clean out of the
registry that might help.

A part of this is the scenario when a new user is created after OOo is
installed. I've just confirmed that file associations are not set in that
case.

By way of example, at my work there are a 100 desktops. The users don't have
roaming profiles, so anytime they go to a different machine it recreates their
profile - and OpenOffice file assocations will be now broken for them, and
behaving differently from a previous machine where it was working. This would
be a nightmare for me as a sysadmin.

To simplify the fix and play nice with other programs, perhaps only address the
case where odt file associations do not exist. For new users, perhaps setting
something for the "default user" might work.

I think the problem he is refering to is that
   should be a link
doesn't come up as a link, whereas
   should be a link
does come up as a link.
Also, if you...
1. Download the file "simpler(notepad-created).html"
2. Open in plain-old texteditor (notepad.exe for me)
3. Open it in Writer, then immediately SaveAs.
4. Open that file in texteditor, you will notice it is different to the first.

A better summary might be "hyperlink problem with drive letters" or similar.

Please REOPEN. From the comments it doesn't look like this was actually tested,
and has been reproduced in OOo2.0.0-release.

Steps taken:
+ Logged on as Administrator
+ Installed OOo2.0.0, carefully ensuring that install for "Anyone who uses this
computer (all users)" was chosen.
+ Confirmed explorer shows icon for odt file and that double-clicking open the
file.
+ Logged out
+ Logged in as aLimitedUser
+ Confirmed explorer does NOT show icon for odt file and that double-clicking
file responds with "Windows cannot open this file. What do you want to do?" with
default selection "Use (Microsoft) Web service to find the appropriate program,"
which not surprisingly fails.

Also, given that double-clicking a file to open it is pretty much "basic
functionality," and confuse the hell out of the mums & dads your trying to win
over, perhaps it should be P2.

Seconding reproduction of this on Windows XP SP2 & OOo 1.9.118.

Works...
+ Click on the 'T' icon in the Drawing toolbar.
+ Drag a text frame
+ Type text inside text frame.
+ Click the Alignment buttons
> text aligns correctly
+ Resize text frame larger
+ Click the Alignment Buttons
> text aligns correctly

Broken...
+ Click on the 'T' icon in the Drawing toolbar.
+ Click on document and type "one two three four five six seven eight nine ten"
on line 1 and "eleven twelve" on line 2.
> watch text frame dynamiclly growing in width
+ Click the Alignment buttons
> nothing happens
+ Resize text frame larger
+ Click the Alignment Buttons
> alignment occurs incorrectly with the original right margin

btw, this seems more like a defect than an enhancement.

Works fine with my LaserJet 1200.

Downloaded and printed "Mon Feb 14 12:12:00 -0700 2005: version 2 or seven.sxw",
but could not see any spacing issues. A scan of my result has been attached for
your review. Certainly could not see the spacing issues shown in your PRN
files, which I viewed with http://www.swiftview.com/viewer.htm, since the files
are PCL not PS.

My platform is Windows XP SP2; OOo 1.9.118; built-in print drivers; USB
connection. Test page shows: Driver 5.00; unires.dll 5.2.370.120; hpcfont.dll
1.0.33.0; hpcstr 1.0.33.0.

2005 ---
SYSTEM ONE (S1)
+ Sapphire Radeon 9600 XT (RV360) Catalyst Version 5.5; 2D Version 6.14.10.6546
+ AMD Athlon XP2500+

SYSTEM TWO (S2)
+ Matrox G450
+ Intel P4 2.4Ghz

BOTH SYSTEMS
+ Windows XP SP 2
+ OpenOffice.org 1.9.118 (installed today all defaults)

Trying out the use case given above on S1...
+ Double-clicked transparents_solucom.ppt to open file in Impress
+ Clicked in toolbar
> Doesn't crash, but is it usual that the transition "Uncover Down Medium"
takes eight seconds to reach half way and then instantaneous for for the
remaining half?

My use case...
+ Start > OpenOffice.org 1.9.118 > OpenOffice.org Impress
+ File > New > Presentation
+ Select "From template" "Introducing a New Product"
+ Right-click "Slide 1" > Slide Transition
+ Select transition "Uncover Down" and Speed=Medium
+ Click in toolbar
> "Uncover Down Medium" transition takes eight seconds to make it half way down
screen, then instantaneous the rest of the way.
+ Select transition Speed=Fast
> "Uncover Down Fast" transition moves consistently from top to bottom over 5
seconds
+ Select transition Speed=Slow
> "Uncover Down Slow" transition takes 10 seconds to make it half way down
screen, then instantaneous the rest of the way.

Trying the http://www.abxzone.com fix on S1...
+ View > Devices By Connection...
> shows BEN1 > ACPI Uniprocessor PC > Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System > PCI bus
> VIA CPU to AGP Controller > RADEON 9600 Series
+ Start > My Computer right click > Manage > Device Manager > System Devices
+ VIA CPU to AGP Controller > Update Driver
? Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software ? Select (No, not
this time)
+ Select (Install from a list of specific location)
+ Select (Don't search. I will choose the driver to install)
+ Select "PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge"
+
+ View > Devices By Connection...
> shows BEN1 > ACPI Uniprocessor PC > Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System > PCI bus
> PCI Standard PCI-to-PCI bridge > RADEON 9600 Series
+ Redid My Use Case
> same results.

Trying My Use Case on S2
+ Redid My Use Case
> "Uncover Down Medium" transition smoothly moves down screen in two seconds

On S1 problem fixed by using plain old VGA with same RADEON card...
+ Uninstalled ATI Drivers. Rebooted. Redid My Use Case using plain VGA driver.
> "Uncover Down Medium" transition smoothly moves down screen in two seconds

On S1 try latest RADEON drivers
+ Installed Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 (pre-requisite for Catalyst 5.7)
+ Installed Catalyst 5.7 Display Drivers, WDM Drivers and Catalyst Control
Center (5-7_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_24085.exe)
+ Redid My Use Case
> "Uncover Down Medium" transition takes eight seconds to make it half way down
screen, then instantaneous the rest of the way.

> now I've just noticed in the Catalyst SMARGART panel that AGPspeed, FastWrite,
AGPwrite, AGPread are all OFF.
+ Reverted "PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge" back to "VIA CPU to AGP bridge"
> now AGPspeed=4x, AGPwrite and AGPread are ON, although FastWrite is still OFF.
+ Installed "VIA 4 in 1 Drivers 4.46Vfor Win98SE/2K/ME/NT4.0/XP" version 4.46
from http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
> FastWrite is now also turned ON
+ View > Devices By Connection...
> shows BEN1 > ACPI Uniprocessor PC > Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System > PCI bus
> VIA CPU to AGP2.0/AGP3.0 > RADEON 9600 Series
+ Redid My Use Case
> "Uncover Down Medium" transition takes eight seconds to make it half way down
screen, then instantaneous the rest of the way.

Try the OpenGL fix mentioned above...
+ Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > View > 3D View > Use OpenGL = YES
+ Redid My Use Case
> "Uncover Down Medium" transition takes eight seconds to make it half way down
screen, then instantaneous the rest of the way.

Just downloaded OpenOffice today 2005-07-31. Help > About shows version 1.9.118.
This use case relates to issue 45338, which was marked as a duplicate of issue
47321, which was closed on 2005-06-29 saying it should be "in the current
master". From the date in Release Notes footer "1.9.m118_snapshot.html,v 1.2
2005/07/18" I'm guessing I should have the fix, but I'm not sure how 47321's
target milestone of OOo 2.0.1 relates to when the fix is actually released, the
the m118 release ntoes dont mention 47321.

Anyhow, the use case for 1.9.118.
+ Start > OpenOffice.org 1.9.118 > OpenOffice Base
+ Create New Database
+ Leave defaults ticked: Yes, register the database for me; Open the database
for editing
+ Filename="New Database"
+
+ Add field ( f1, Text [VARCHAR] )
+ TableName="Table1"
+ ?Should a primary key be created now?
> save appears to be successful
+ Add field ( f2, Integer [INTEGER] ), with AutoValue=Yes
+ Click out of field on next row.
+
>> dialog appears "Error while connecting to the data source. Column constraints
are not acceptable in statement [ALTER TABLE "Table1" ADD "f2" INTEGER IDENTITY]

This comment has been added to both issues 45338 and 47321.

This is my first contribution - please be gentle :)
