Re: [Alsa-user] US-122 distortion
If that does not help try ruling out an interrupt sharing issue by testing with network, firewire onboard audio disabled and nvidia module not loaded. Thanks for the suggestions Lee. No luck though, same amount of crackly distortion as before... not just a little bit, way too much be usable. FWIW, if anyone is interested, this is what it sounds like... http://markc.renta.net/lib/ogg/us122_distortion_20070928.ogg --markc - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. No luck though, same amount of crackly distortion as before... not just a little bit, way too much be usable. I did as you suggested and disabled onboard eth and sound in the BIOS, used vesa instead of the nVidia xorg driver, and plugged the USB cable into the rear sockets instead of front. I've got 4 x 64bit distros and 2 x 32 bit distros on this machine, all with 2.6.22 kernels, and it's the same distortion only when using the Tascam US-122. Put the US-122 on an older VIA/AMD2800+ machine or a Dell/Intel laptop and there is no distortion. So it's something to do with this Abit AN-M2 mainboard, most likely, or perhaps the AMD SMP kernel (6000+ AM2 socket)... A 32bit ArchLinux install on an older machine with the same kernel is (always has been) just fine with this US-122 external soundcard. I thought it may have been a 64bit problem but the 32bit Kubuntu install is the same so the main difference is the mainboard and SMP CPU. FWIW I took the hard drive out of my old 32bit/2.6.22 kernel system (VIA K8 / AMD2800+ uniprocessor) and put into my new nForce4 / AMD6000+ SMP processor system and, sure enough, the sound is now distorted. So exactly the same driver + kernel + apps (that worked fine in my older VIA system) in a different mainboard + CPU environment now has unusable distorted sound out the USB soundcard. I guess my next step is to roll a new kernel with ALSA from CVS, and if that doesn't work, I'll try the Opensound drivers. --markc - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. If I have to pull in the kernel source (I guess) then I may as well roll the latest kernel because it seems this mainboard I have is only just recently supported, the nVidia driver only started working for my video on the last update. Just recompile Alsa 1.0.15rcx and install the drivers ( make install) Ie, ./configure make make install in the alsa-driver directory. I'll try that first. Thanks for the reminder, been a few years since I've had to compile any kernel or drivers. --markc - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. [Alsa-user] US-122 distortion
I have a Tascam US-122 USB soundcard on a newish Abit AN-M2 (nForce4) using both ArchLinux 64bit and Kubuntu 32bit distros with a 2.6.22 kernel. Onboard MCP67 (snd_hda_intel) audio seems fine but audio in and out the snd_usb_usx2y driver is distorted. I've tried nrpacks=1 which is the only tweak I could find by Googling. I thought it may have been a 64bit problem but the 32bit Kubuntu install is the same so the main difference is the mainboard and SMP CPU. I think all systems have ALSA 1.0.14.
