[AMRadio] Hallicrafters R-12 speaker

2009-09-04 Thread WA5AM
I am in need of diminsions, detailed photos, or whatever I can get of the
R-12 bass reflex speaker.

A very good friend of mine is a cabinet maker and is willing to build a
replica of the R-12 for my SX-28. I know these are few and far between, but
hope someone on the list might have one, and willing to make some accurate
measurements, etc. Also while I'm at it, recommendations/sources for a 12
full range speaker would be appreciated.

Re: [AMRadio] SX-28A restoration project

2009-09-04 Thread WA5AM
Thanks for all the nice comments guys!

I will keep posting photos as I go. I'm still waiting on a red laquer stick
for the red lettering on the front panel. After that, I plan to clear coat
it and get it back on the rig. Next will be the cabinet, which I had three
cans of paint mixed to match the original color, but first I have to put a
layer of wrinkle on it.

Click the thumbnails for a larger version, click the larger one for an even

[AMRadio] Hallicrafters PM 23

2009-09-04 Thread John King
I have a Hallicrafters PM 23 speaker that matches my SX 28A but it needs rust
removal and refinishing. I would appreciate pictures and methods used to
re-finish my PM 23 if anyone has specific information based on experience. I
know that W8UT has worked on the PM 23 and I have communicated with him on that

Does anyone have a silkscreen to re print the Green Hallicrafters printing on
the face of the PM 23? Your assistance will be greatly appreciated and you may
email me direct. Thanks and 73, John, K5PGW

CORRECTION... I have both the PM 23 and R42 that need refinishing. I got them

Re: [AMRadio] Hallicrafters R-12 speaker

2009-09-04 Thread bbruhns
In speaker system design, there are optimum combinations of driver and
enclosure. This may or may not be the optimum driver for this enclosure.
There are complex driver parameters that can allow an analysis to determine the
optimum enclosure characteristics. The basic issue is the acoustic match at
the bottom end - does it boom, is it going to be thin sounding, what will the
frequency response extend, etc. Of course there is also the power handling
issue. Before spending a lot of money for the driver, I recommend that these
issues be considered.

Re: [AMRadio] Hallicrafters R-12 speaker

2009-09-04 Thread Bob Peters
You are correct... They used Jensen and Quam but
only used 10 oz magnets...The magnet size is what
determines sound quality on a speaker... My
company manufactures both 5 and 10 oz but only up
to 8 ...Now you make that speaker a coaxial and
it will improve the quality by 50% or
more...Speakers are just like radio's... The
better the enclosure the better the speaker like a
transmitter and an antenna...

More later on enclosure design///

Well, a Jensen P12R isn't much different in
price.

The originals I do believe were made by Jensen.

Re: [AMRadio] Hallicrafters R-12 speaker

2009-09-04 Thread rbethman
The Jensen P12R uses a 7 oz. alnico. It is rated at 25 Watts.
Certainly more than the radio will do by itself.

My experience is that alnico magnets are more powerful per ounce than
old-fashioned ones.

That is why they use alnico and sometimes rare-earth materials in the
head assembly of computer hard drives.

It is one of the reasons for the reduction in size of drives.

Re: [AMRadio] Hallicrafters R-12 speaker

2009-09-04 Thread Bob Peters
That makes it just about right Our 10 oz are
rated at 40 watts...We use them in a 70V config
with a max of 15 watts...With a good can they
sound great...Speakers with no backing are CRAP...
That is why enclosure is so important...My Shack
speaker is an original 15 inch Jensen with a 20 lb
magnet. It was the first coax speaker Jensen
made... It is in a blonde Jensen box that has 2
inches of sound deadning material and is bass
ported in the rear. This make SW BROADCAST sound
like a dream...
