[amsat-bb] FT-847 vs IC-910
For vhf/uhf satellite use I'm seriously thinking about selling off my FT-847 for money toward a IC-910. Could some of you on this list comment on how these 2 radios compare for satellite (and if you know vhf/uhf weak signal) work? why one radio over the other? What are your thoughts and experiences with the IC-910 ? Same question for the FT-847. Thanks, Eric AF6EP ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Hi Luc, VE2DWE My setup for 10450-10452 MHz with an IF 146-148 MHz was built for AO40 but tanks to AMSAT-DL it will be fully usable for P3E. A standard transverter designed by DB6NT for 10368 MHz and IF 144 MHz was originally published by DUBUS 2/ 1991 pag 17 but it was newly described by my self beginning from RADIO RIVISTA 5/1957 pages 38-41 adding all necessary modifications to rise the frequency range 10450-10452 MHz with an IF of 146-148 MHz to be used for AO40 and P3E here are some characteristics of my setup: Dish: diameter 60 cm; F/D = 0.38 ; G = 33 dBi Feed: home brewed Chaparral for RHCP and LHCP Preamplifier : i0LVA designe ; NF= 1.3 dB ; G= 19 dB as was described in DUBUS 3/1994 Local Oscillator : Designed by i2SG and publisced in Radio Rivista 9/1994 and 3/1995 with a XTAL of 107.333 MHz made by Telequartz and designed to work in an owen at 60° C with a RF output of -3 dBm Local Oscillator Multiplier and Amplifier by 24 ; 107.333 x 24 = 2576 MHz module designed by DF9LN and sold by the EISCH ELECTRONIC with a RF output of +12 dBm with all modifications to rise 2576 MHz as described by my self in Radio Rivista 6/1997 pages 36-40 IF output : 2576 x 4 = 10304 MHz ; 10304 + 146 = 10450 MHz 2576 x 4 = 10304 MHz ; 10304 + 148 = 10452 MHz The multiplication of 2576 x 4 = 10304 MHz is originally included into the transverter itself. For AO40 and P3E this transverter and the associated setup was intented obviously to be used only for receiving and actually with the poor solar activity of only 67 sfu at 10.7 cm I do receive about 4 dB of (S+N)/N of Sun-Noise 73" de i8CVS Domenico - Original Message - From: "Luc Leblanc" To: Cc: Sent: Thursday, May 28, 2009 5:08 AM Subject: [amsat-bb] 10GHZ trabsceiver > Just a resend first one come out with wrong date. > > In view of what's is planned for the next P3E HEO i want to try some 10ghz band > experiment > > I got a local Hamfest a Hughes LNA P/N 1011836-0009 personal earth station. A TNC is basically a glorified modem. [amsat-bb] Hughes PES
Hi Luc, The PES hasn't been around for a long time, almost 20 years. I don't have manuals for this anymore and memory fades but the recive range is probably 11.7 to 12.2 Ghz and the transmit range is probably 14.0 to 14.5 Mhz. I think the receive IF range is the standard 950-1450 Mhz range but Hughes used a proprietory transmit IF. Voltage was supplied on the IFL cable using bias T's internal to the "InDoorUnit". It was also customary to inject the 10 MHz PLL reference on the TX and sometimes RX IFL cable(s). The unit on eBay is the second generation "OutDoorUnit" manufactured by NEC of Japan for Hughes. The pointing output supplied a DC voltage proportional to signal strength. This unit will require allot of surgery to be useful 10 Ghz. ...de Howie AB2S ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] WD9EWK at Prescott (AZ) hamfest on Saturday, 30 May
Hi! On Saturday, 30 May 2009, I will have an AMSAT table at the hamfest in Prescott, Arizona. This hamfest is a joint venture between the Yavapai Amateur Radio Club and Verde Valley Amateur Radio Association, and will be held at the Granite Mountain Middle School in Prescott (grid DM34sn). The hamfest runs from 0800 to 1300 local (1500-2000 UTC). More information about the hamfest is available at: http://www.w7yrc.org/ham_fest.htm During the hamfest and before it officially opens, I will have demonstrations on FM satellite passes as well as VO-52. You may hear me on as early as 1300 UTC, even if I have nobody listening to the pass at my station except for me. After the hamfest, as I have typically done in the past year or so, I will make a long drive back home. I hope to make it as far north as grid DM36 for the AO-51 passes Saturday evening (somewhere on the south rim of the Grand Canyon, inside Grand Canyon National Park), and may be on AO-27 and/or SO-50 from grids DM34 and/or DM35 after the hamfest on my way toward grid DM36. If you work WD9EWK on Saturday, either from the Prescott Hamfest or from some other location later in the day, I will be happy to send you a QSL card (or cards) to confirm the contact(s). Please e-mail me directly the details for each QSO, and - if you're in the log - I will mail you the card(s). No need to send me QSLs or SASEs for my activity on Saturday. 73! [amsat-bb] Re: M2 Xyagi sat 2 meter antenna
Hi Norman: I used KLM with a polarity switch many years ago. The polarity switch seemed unreliable and lossy, and I often forgot to change polarity on Leo’s. When I replaced my KLM with M2, I decided not to bother with switching polarity and just run RHCP. The benefits: No switch losses, more gain. Do not need to worry about forgetting to hit the polarity switch. Transmitter power not limted to switch. Other Tips: Go with the most elements you can afford for a single boom. 20+ elements on 2-meters 40+ elements on 440 Coax: You can now get Flexible thick coax that will support an antenna Rotor. Most people used RG-8 style coax, which is approximately 10 mm in diameter. However you can now get flexible rotor grade coax which is approximately 15 mm in diameter, and has much lower loss than the best RG-8 style coax. Example: Belden RG-213 145 MHz 2.5 dB loss per 100 feet 438 MHz 4.5 dB loss per 100 feet LMR 600 UltraFlex Rotor cable 145 MHz 1.1 dB loss per 100 feet 438 MHz 2.0 dB loss per 100 feet As you can see, by switching from 10mm coax to 15mm coax you can reduce you loss by over 50%. The 15mm cables cost 2-3 times as much, however you will not have to worry about coax losses any more on Frequencies below 2 gig. 73 wf1f --- On Wed, 5/27/09, Norman W Osborne wrote: > From: Norman W Osborne > Subject: [amsat-bb] M2 Xyagi sat 2 meter antenna > To: "amsat-bb" > Date: Wednesday, May 27, 2009, 1:41 PM > Hi Everyone, > Anyone out there using m2 Xyagi sat antenna with > switching? > Would like to hear your comments. > > I have settled on the gulf alpha for 70cm but I am looking > for more gain > for 2 meters. > > 73, > Norman. > ___ > Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. > Opinions expressed are those of the author. > Not an AMSAT-NA member? For about $65, I was able to build a modified version of the K8DAV U-100 Rotor controller, and now my Elk antenna turns automatically and follows the satellites during each pass. My particular rotor is the Alliance HIR, which is electrically the same as the U-83 and the U-98, and which I bought for $25. The K8DAV controller for these rotors is the same as the one for the U-100, except for the value of the motor start capacitor. The U-110 takes the same capacitor as the U-100. This was a fun weekend project and a very useful addition to my satellite setup. I picked up two of the most expensive parts, the transfomers, for $1 each at the Goodwill store, in the basket of assorted wall-warts in the electronics section (bring a VOM and test the wall-wart before purchasing). You could also use the transformer and capacitor from the rotor's original controller, but I was afraid to cannibalize it without being sure I could get the new one to work. Otherwise, the project box was $18, the Basic Stamp board was about $20, and the solid state relays were $7 each on eBay. All other parts were inexpensive. Typically, a tuning interval of 100Hz is fine for CW and SSB signals, while the FM interval should be set according to the capabilities of your radio and the actual mode of operation. 600 Hz should be fine for FM voice, while a smaller interval might be desireable for packet. Regardless of the interval you choose, updates will happen faster near the center of a pass George, KA3HSW - Original Message - From: "Shamai "SAM" Opfer" <4z1ws@gmail.com> To: Sent: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 11:55 AM Subject: [amsat-bb] CP6 received at last... > Hi all, > > Finally succeeded to copy and record CP6 CW beacon. > > The digital mode sounds difficult to inercept, as it is very short, > imediately following the CW transmission, and appears only every 30 > seconds, which i think makes it impossible to manually tune on the SSB >
