Congratulations!

I know you had been working on getting Adrian in your log for
some time, and Adrian's receive issues on AO-7 initially didn't
help your cause. It may not be a "world record" for distance
covered, but you two certainly stretched that footprint for all
you could.

It's great to see those calls, most of them being east of the
Rockies and generally unable to work Hawaii on the FM birds.
I know a few of the XE satellite operators also put AA5UK/KH6
in their logs. Alvaro XE2AT had already worked Hawaii in the
past, but was looking for Adrian's grid on Kauai. I think Omar
XE1AO and Bernardo XE2HWB also worked Adrian out there.
These two may still need other states for satellite WAS, but
at least they can focus on the other states using other birds.
There may be other XEs that I'm not aware of, but I know
Adrian chatted with several of them via e-mail trying to make
those QSOs happen.

> Thanks again to Adrian for making the significant time and
> effort to activate Hawaii as much as he has on this trip.

Yes, Adrian has tried to be on a lot of passes for the benefit
of satellite operators. He had been working on this trip for
months, and changing his plans so he would have more time
on the satellites and still enjoy the non-radio parts of the trip
(i.e., no HF activity, something he had planned to do out
there originally). I hope Adrian takes time to elaborate on the
trip here on the -BB or in an article for the AMSAT Journal,
as that would be an interesting read.

I myself have found the solution :))

Both the microHam III and WISP had PTT enabled within the configuration.
After removed the setting from the urouter (microHam Software) WISP
was able to transmit.

Now lets try to send some messages via HO-68

S band DATV

Better to be prepared than sorry!

Did anyone have an idea how to feed a DATV signal coming from the actual S band
former TV converter eg: Transystem AIDC 3731A? They where
made for analog TV i think and i don't know if they will be usable for DATV? As
the output is made for 75 Ohms regular cable TV set
connector i think any signal can be received on a standard TV set but with the
modified IF output in the ham band or in the 123MHZ range it
fall into the regular TV set bandpass on 54 to 890 MHz. As per the specs it
seems the AIDC 3731A is "digital ready" But is this digital is
in the same protocole than the already existing commercial digital protocole?
On a French site they refer to a signal bandwidth of 48KHZ
that is too wide for any amateur radio standard rig but OK for a TV receiver
but on other site they speak of 6MHZ!. Some search refer to
the MPEG2 protocole it is supported on various FTA receiver but QPSK in various
flavor DVB-B DVB-C DVB-S is the mode reported on many site
in Europe but they confirm the QPSK DVB-S can be received with standard
commercial digital receiver but not with the GMSK protocole (see
below for the links and info's)

TranSystem Inc., a world wide leader in MMDS/MDS technology, offers a complete
line of PCS, WCS and radar filtering downconverters. Our
designs have been copeid by many, but the original out performs the rest. The
digital ready AIDC easily integrates with parabolic antennas
or any of our esthetically correct antennas.

[amsat-bb] Message from Shanghai Expo 2010

2010-04-04 Thread William Leijenaar
Hello AMSATs,

I am sending my greetings to all of you from Shanghai, where I participate at
the Ham Radio Expo.
It was a great experience to get in contact with the Chinese hams and to
promote my linear transponder and also explain more about amateur satellites
(which is still not very known to most hams here).

I have given a presentation on the first and also on the second day. Twice, as
there was a great interrest among the hams to get some more information about
the satellite topic :o)
I am sure there will be some more hams interrested in amateur satellites at
this side of the globe...

Unfortunatly I didn't see to many foreign hams, but I was lucky to meet Masato
Shibayama, JA7JZS of the Japanese Amateur Satellite Association. We had a nice
talk about satellites, and exchanged some new ideas. I also met one Dutch HAM,
PA0RWH, which was also nice so far away from home :o)

For the ICOM fans I also checked for the new IC-9100 but it was not presented
at this ham expo.
The only thing the ICOM people could tell me is that it might be available at
the next year expo, which is quiet some time to go...

Many 73 from Shanghai,
William Leijenaar, PE1RAH

Folks, It was a worth a short on todays' 15:38 UTC AO7 Pass but no Joy!

Unfortunately we have had heavy winds in excess of 30 to 40 mph gusting to
50mph. The static levels on 2m receive are very high and I could barely hear a
few voices on the satellite. The only station I could barely make out was
KC7MG. I was looking for K8YSE, WD9EWK and several others, but I just could
not hear my own downlink. Strange because the day before I had pass all to
myself over the Pacific and I had all the SatPC setting correct and ready to go
for this pass. I could hear myself perfectly.

I also was pointing my antenna straight at a big rain cloud in the path of the
satellite and I am sure that did not help matters with the signal or the QRN on
2m.

Sorry it was worth the try but tropical conditions are causing some interesting
attenuation and noise on AO7 and VU52 downlinks. FO-29 and HO68 on the other
work like a charm I can work those with 5 W and my Elk antenna with no trouble.
One could probably turn down the power even more and get into those satellites
without any difficulty.

Diving got canceled due to bad weather. I will take a look what I can still
work this afternoon. I will be out of dinner which means I can't make the FO-29
passes at 03:26 or 05:07 UTC. Sorry. Last day here and I need to take out my
significant other to keep her happy.

Aloha from windy Kauai.

[amsat-bb] Re: Research project

2010-04-04 Thread Reid Crowe
James, KK6MC and Ron, W6QZ have both mentioned John Browning, W6SP (SK)
as working satellites from Thule. Does anyone have more information on
his operation from here?

[amsat-bb] AO-51 mode change

2010-04-04 Thread Mark L. Hammond
Hi All,

AO-51 was changed a bit early today, at 21:10 UTC 4 April. It is currently in
"normal mode", with 435.300 (145.920 uplink) running about 480 mW (and 435.150
running about the same). We hope to catch up on some telemetry during this
week. If we don't need any telemetry, it is likely that we'll increase the
power on 435.300. The schedule for the rest of the month should be posted
soon--sorry for the delay.

Beginning with May 2nd, periods of eclipse return to AO-51. We'll have to
watch the satellite carefully and make some modifications to what we've been
doing over the last several months. More details as we get closer to the
eclipses...

73,

Mark L. Hammond [N8MH]

[amsat-bb] AA5UK/KH6 BL02ic schedule for April 5th

2010-04-04 Thread Adrian Engele
All my time in Kauai is rapidly coming to end.

Here are the last passes I will to to get on today:

April 5:
AO-51 02:05 UTC
VO-52 06:28 UTC
FO-29 06:53 UTC.

I am sorry I cannot make the FO-29 passes at 03:26 and 05:07. I will be out for
the evening for a last dinner.

Thanks again for the great contacts and effort to work me under difficult wind,
rain and static noise conditions.

Tomorrow I will be heading back to Oahu for a couple of days. More than likely
I will not be operating as there are mountains to the North and many hotels
blocking possible the path to the satellites.

Aloha from Kauai.

73, Adrian AA5UK/KH6

[amsat-bb] Re: Research project

2010-04-04 Thread Clare Fowler
I worked OX3DB on AO-13 on 5th Jan 1990.
The card says the operator was Jan Nielson and his QTH
was Nuuk (Godthab) on South West Coast.

[amsat-bb] AO-7 Mode C? (Or other reason for varying signal strength?)

2010-04-04 Thread Bill Dzurilla
Hi folks,

Since starting my effort to work Europe on AO-7, I've found that the very low
elevation sigs vary significantly on different
passes.  Some mornings I can easily hear my downlink and start working
Europe at 0.7 degrees elevation, while other days I can't hear myself
until 5 degrees elevation, after the window to Europe has closed.  Not
sure if this is due to band conditions, satellite polarization,
obstructions at certain positions, operator error, local noise, or what.

Today I spoke with another experienced AO-7 op and he had an interesting
theory: on the bad days (when I don't hear my downlink until 5 degress), the
sat is in Mode C (lower power).  This seems to make sense, because there does
not seem to be any middle ground -- I start hearing my downlink at either 0.7
degrees or 5 degrees, never at 2-4 degrees.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?  Are we able to predict when the sat will be
in one mode or another?  Or any other explanation for the signal strength
variations?
