Last Week 3

Pluses
Second film at the top of the music charts that stars Abhishek
Bachchan, 'Guru' is good news for everyone involved as the music has
gathered momentum way before the movie releases in mid-January.
While 'Barso Re' is sure to go down well with Ash fans, the song that
should make a lot go 'crazy' after a few weeks would be 'Mayya Mayya'
with Madame Sherawat on fire! A couple of (situational) songs are not
much impressive and may only do well if integrated seamlessly with the

[arr] The singlers list..!

2006-12-01 Thread up84mouli
Hi Fans,
Hope everybody enjoyed Guru.

This is a slightly unimportant topic but like a small good break
from the intense discussions related to Guru and from various other
topics.

There are singers who become famous after singing for ARR. But the
ones in this list have sung for him just once..!!

Okay, apart from a few exceptions there are two main reasons:
1. They are professionals in some other field and dont sing much.
2. They are much bigger talents in their forms of music and dont sing
film songs much.

1. Ashutosh Gowariker (Swades)
2. Arjun (Parasuram)
3. Bharatiraja (Karuthamma)
4. Manoj (Taj Mahal)
5. Silambarasan / Simbu (Kaathal Virus)
6. Anupama (?) (Thiruda Thiruda - Chandralekha song)
7. Minmini (Roja)
8. P Susila (Poo Kodiyin song from Iruvar)
9. Bombay Jayasree (Narumugaye - Iruvar)
10. Reena Bhardwaj (?) (Yeh Rishta - Meenaxi)
11. Bhattacharya (?) (Jack n Jill - Parasuram)
12. Usha Uthup (Daud title song)
13. Kumar Sanu (Mellisaye from Mr. Romeo in Tamil. I guess he sung the
hindi one)
14. Nusarat Fateh Ali Khan (Chanda suraj - Vande Mataram)
15. Abhijeeth (or is it Abhishek?) (Chidiya song in Nayak)

(?) means I am either doubtful of the name, the song or whether they
really have sung only one song. Corrections arr welcome.

This is not including the most recent ones and also excluding the list
of singers from Hollywood ventures like BD, WOHE etc. Also not in the
list are the ones who collabarated for Jana Gana Mana version of A R
Rahman.

Neither is the list complete or absolutely correct - something for
you to think over and come up with...

Thanks for reading.

[arr] Apun ka Choice reviews Guru

2006-12-01 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

Album Review
- Melodies that linger
By Aparajita Ghosh

A R Rahman seems to have an inexhaustible source of music inside him. Right
from his memorable
compositions for Mani Ratnam’s movie ‘Roja’, the talented composer has churned
out melodies
that have stayed with music lovers years after the movies featuring them came
and went. Now,
for Ratnam’s latest movie ‘Guru’, Rahman once again comes up with something
special, though not
exceptional.

There are a number of songs in ‘Guru’ that exemplify Rahman’s command of both
eastern and
western style of music. Add to this Gulzar’s simple, poetic and thought
provoking words that
stand out poignantly in most of the compositions. The end product is an album
that is certainly
out of the ordinary. Moreover, the music grows on you with repeated hearing.

The mood is set in the very opening song of the album, Barso Re. A lively rain
song with a
melody presumably based on raga Bahaar, ‘Barso Re’ is rendered effectually by
Shreya Ghosal.
Male singer Uday Mazumdar chips in his bit in the middle.

It is in the second song of the album, Tere Bina, that Rahman shows his
wizardry. A highly
addictive song with influences of Sufi qawwalis and Indian classical, the song
is a just
tribute to the late master Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Rahman himself sings
this song, with
commendable interludes by Murtaza Qadir and Chinmayee. Tere Bina eventually
turns out to be the
best number in the whole package.

Ek Lo Ek Muft sounds more like a situational track with lilting musical
arrangement by Rahman.
The song doesn’t really have a strong melody. Lyrics by Gulzar are simple and
rustic. Bappi
Lahiri too sounds very much unlike his usual self while rendering this song in
a tipsy voice. A
song like this usually has its appeal on the screen only.

The album then veers into a romantic, sensual mood with Mayya Mayya, which
features Mallika
Sherawat in a single song appearance in ‘Guru’. Sung in a sibilant voice by
Mayyam Toller, the
song has an unmistakable Arabic touch in its melody. Rahman shows his musical
skill by blending
Indian folk style in between and adding melodic improvisations as the song
draws to a close.

The romantic mood is consolidated with Ay Hairathe, a somewhat unconventional
composition with
influences of Ghazal and Scottish music. Suitably enough, Hariharan gets to
show his vocal
range in this number after Rahman introduces the song in his deep humming
voice. Alka Yagnik
too does a commendable job.

Baazi Laga is the most forgettable of all songs in the album. The song is high
on tempo but low
on melody. Udit Narayan’s vocals too fail to salvage this number.

Some compensation comes in the form of the last number Jaage Hain, which closes
the album on a
high note. Rich in orchestration and musical nuances, Jaage Hain lingers on
even after it is
over. Gulzar’s lyrics are inspiring and Chitra sings the song with the required
emotive appeal.
After the song’s pace is set, Rahman joins Chitra on the microphone and moves
up and down
through the musical scale. The orchestra swells, the pitch is raised and the
song ends at a
crescendo. Undoubtedly, Jaage Hain is one of the best songs of ‘Guru’.

 Dear Friends,

It is nice to hear that Living legend ARR and Renowned Director
Maniratnam Combo Guru is creating waves in the Audio business
throughout the world. But it is rather very sad to note that the
Guru is likely to be dubbed in Tamil and Telugu Versions. Ace
Director and Producer Maniratnam should restrain himself from doing
such a foolish job, because the songs of the original GURU is so
catchy, realistic and athentic, the same could not be dubbed in any
other language. The lyrics of Guru is so amazing and meaningful. I
think Gulzar Sab has taken great pain in doing such a fabulous job.
For instant the Urdu Phrase Jaage hain der tak hamain Kuch der sone
do . Thodi si raat aur hai, subah to hone do is purely a Urdu Poem
penned by Gulzar Sab which means I have awaken till the end of
night, Let me have sleep for some more time. Still some night is
left, let the morning begin. Is it posible for any lyricist to put
the same translation into tamil or telugu track? Never. It is
impossible. We have already experienced listening to the Tamil
Versions of Hit Musicals like Dil se (Uyire in Tamil) Minsara Kanuvu
(Sapney in Hindi) Kadhalan and Kadhal Desham in Hindi, the lyrics
dubbed in all such Hindi Movies were utterly failure and miserable
giving different meaning. However, all the original versions whether
it is Produced in Tamil or Hindi were very excellent, except, the
Hit Films like Bombay, Roja, Chor Chor (Thiruda.. Thiruda in Tamil)
Ayoodha Ezaathu (Yuva in Hindi), where Mani, Rahman and Vairamuthu /
Mehboob have jointly done a fantastic work without paving any way
for critics.

Hence it is requested that the Ace director Maniratnam should
think million times before dubbing the original GURU to any other
regional langauge.

[arr] 'Mayya Mayya' in 'Guru' set to be Mallika's 'Hamma Hamma'

'Mayya Mayya' in 'Guru' set to be Mallika's 'Hamma Hamma'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, December 01, 2006]

Sonali Bendre became an overnight sensation when she gyrated
seductively to Rahman's 'Hamma Hamma' in 'Bombay'. While the song
was crooned by Remo Fernandes on a male dancer, the person who
benefited most was Sonali Bendre who was the song's highlight in
motion.

Though Mallika's superstar status is not dependent on her song and
dance appearances alone, especially after 'Pyaar Ke Side Effects'
where she has given a good account of herself as an actor who knows
what she is doing, she would certainly gain immensely if her next
guest appearance clicks.

Yes, we are talking about the number 'Mayya Mayya' in which she is
shown shaking a leg or two along with Abhishek Bachchan for the
film 'Guru'. With usual suspects like A.R.Rahman and Mani Ratnam
around, the song is set to recreate the magic of 'Hamma Hamma'!

[arr] Rahman’s ‘Jaage Hain’; Guru’s delight

Rahman's `Jaage Hain'; Guru's delight
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, December 02, 2006]

A R Rahman has done it again. His superlative brilliance in the
soundtrack of `Guru' is a revelation for the music lovers. Be
it `Barso Re' where Aishwarya is dancing like a dream under the
canopy of blue sky, `Ae Hairathe Aashiqui' or `Tere Bina' Rahman
gems are a collector's delight. But the song that leaves you
speechless has to be `Jaage Hain'. For it's not merely a song but a
state of mind. A stream of sub-consciousness that flows unabated
invoking the spiritual side of your personality that stays dormant.

Chitra starts off the proceedings in a slow sedate manner as her
vocals unleash the magic with little or no accompaniment in the
background. AR joins her in the whispering mode pleading for some
sleep for he has remained awake for most part of the night anyways.
And then he shifts gears magnificently and touches the highest
contours of magnificence. There are layers of meanings in this song.
It's about human life where happiness is a brief episode in the
general drama of pain. `Jaage Hain' is one song that catapults
Rahman to the level of greatest maestros or artistes who delivered
much more than mere entertainment through their art.

Rahman magic flows like an impassioned river determined to embrace
the sea of timelessness.

  Hi Chandra,

interesting list.
Off the top of my head
- Anupama has done a lot of singing for ARR (mostly in Harmony). I think she
was credited as the lead fot atleast one other song (Mercury Pookkal)
- Minmini has also sung a few songs (Paarkadhe from Gentleman, Pudhiya
Mugam, Gang Master etc)
- P.Susheela - Duet and Indian
- Reena B sang Main vari vari
- Abhijeet sang Teri Meri Baat from Sapney

Hope everybody enjoyed Guru.

This is a slightly unimportant topic but like a small good break
from the intense discussions related to Guru and from various other
topics.

There are singers who become famous after singing for ARR. But the
ones in this list have sung for him just once..!!

Okay, apart from a few exceptions there are two main reasons:
1. They are professionals in some other field and dont sing much.
2. They are much bigger talents in their forms of music and dont sing
film songs much.

1. Ashutosh Gowariker (Swades)
2. Arjun (Parasuram)
3. Bharatiraja (Karuthamma)
4. Manoj (Taj Mahal)
5. Silambarasan / Simbu (Kaathal Virus)
6. Anupama (?) (Thiruda Thiruda - Chandralekha song)
7. Minmini (Roja)
8. P Susila (Poo Kodiyin song from Iruvar)
9. Bombay Jayasree (Narumugaye - Iruvar)
10. Reena Bhardwaj (?) (Yeh Rishta - Meenaxi)
11. Bhattacharya (?) (Jack n Jill - Parasuram)
12. Usha Uthup (Daud title song)
13. Kumar Sanu (Mellisaye from Mr. Romeo in Tamil. I guess he sung the
hindi one)
14. Nusarat Fateh Ali Khan (Chanda suraj - Vande Mataram)
15. Abhijeeth (or is it Abhishek?) (Chidiya song in Nayak)

(?) means I am either doubtful of the name, the song or whether they
really have sung only one song. Corrections arr welcome.

This is not including the most recent ones and also excluding the list
of singers from Hollywood ventures like BD, WOHE etc. Also not in the
list are the ones who collabarated for Jana Gana Mana version of A R
Rahman.

Neither is the list complete or absolutely correct - something for
you to think over and come up with...

Thanks for reading.
Chandra.
