Shekhar Kapur has come down to India promote his
 new film Elizabeth --

 and Clive Owen
[Images]. The film, which opened in October
 overseas, will release on
  November 23 in India.

Meanwhile, Kapur has already gotten busy with his
 next project -- an
animated film on, hold your breath, cockroaches!

Titled A Suitable Cockroach, the film will have
 music composed by A R
  Rahman.

Speaking about the film, Shekhar says that the
 idea came to him when
he wondered what the most hated creature in Asia
 was. It turned out
  to be cockroaches.

If people can hate a creature that lovable, then
 he has a character
in hand. We had a character called Gabbar Singh
 which you hated but
he ultimately he became the film, Shekhar says.

The film is in its pre-production phase. Besides
 this, Shekhar's long-
planned Time Machine will also go on the floors
 though this time the
maverick director will don the producer's hat.

[arr] ANWAR SONG

2007-11-17 Thread Vithur
http://nevil4u.wordpress.com/2007/11/17/maula-mere-anwar/

When Sreenivasan Jain of NDTV asked A.R Rahman on which were the songs that
he liked in the recent times apart from his own he singled out Maula Mere
from Anwar. Maybe the song does carry a Rahman touch to it in the rhythm
arrangement, melody and overall feel. In fact it could easily be mistaken
for an A.R.R number! This beautiful song was created by Mithoon a new
comer in Bollywood. Anwar has other melodious numbers tuned by Pankaj
Awasthi. But Maula Mere sure stirs your soul somewhere! The song has been
rendered by Roop Kumar Rathod another favourite singer from the
A.R.Rcamp. Roopkumar is better known as the brother of Vinod Kumar
Rathod
(Playback Singer) and music director Shravan Kumar Rathod (Nadeem-Shravan
fame). He has a mellifluous voice deep rooted in classical music which he
knows to use effectively. He has been silently here in Bollywood since the
90's but off late has finally got due recognition for his talent and hard
work. He is also an accomplished Ghazal Singer, an amazing Tabla player and
a music director! His wife Sonali Rathod too is an equally good Ghazal
Singer.

Dear Rahmaniacs,

Few salient points of discussion between Reihana and Thumba Raja on
yesterday's Rahmania Show in FM 91.9

1. Thumba Raja assosciated with Rahman for the past 14 years . He plays the
Thumba instrument, and has been associated with Rahman right from the time,
he was a keyboard player for Music Directors like Naidu. A Long Time Family
Friend of ARR; He, Sivamani ( Drummist ) and Rahman used to have a lot of

2. ARR's first car was an ambassador, which he still preserves ; For that
matter, he never forgets the past, and keeps a store of everything that gave
him joy once upon a time. His car number is 1771 ( first Car - Ambassador )

3. ARR always likes doing Jingles, and Background scores more than doing
Film Songs. He always used to carry the Walkman wherever he went. It was
reall difficult to see him without a walkman, and always used to listen to
music.

4. During 1990s, all film directors wanted a young Music Director, when it
was Mani who first spotted ARR , after he won an award for his Leo Coffee Ad

was little reluctant of doing films, as he was not interested in film music.
he told Mani that he was interested in BGMs, and onyl jingles, and was not

[arr] Rahman all the way, Dil Se: Delhi concert!

2007-11-17 Thread Thulasi Ram
It was one of the grandest shows Delhi has ever seen.

The set was majestic, with yellow lights embellishing the red eye-catching
décor. But on the whole it was all about the music at the very successful
Fever 104 FM's big AR Rahman concert.

Delhi turned up in all its might at the West Delhi District Centre Ground,
Raja Garden. Approximately 25,000 people attended the event.

Accompanied by an army of musicians, the maestro painted vivid musical
landscapes to a bewitched crowd. There were several high points of the
evening: one of them saw Rahman speak from his heart on various topics close
to his heart.

He did not restrict his renditions to Hindi or English and also had some
Tamil favourites thrown in, which were lapped up by the crowd. Surprisingly,
some fans sang along in Tamil. His star performers too left no stone
unturned to ensure that this concert is etched in the memory of all those
who were here.

Chitra, Hariharan, Kailash Kher, rapper Blaze, Naresh Iyer and Kailash Kher,
among others, were truly spectacular. There were sounds of violins, flutes,
awesome percussion and Rahman himself with his jukebox, synthesiser.

There was *Chaiyya Chaiyya*,* Tu hi Re*,* Khabali*,* Chanda Re*,*
Roja*,*Bharat Humko
*,* Maiyya Maiyya* and Rahman even gave a sneak peak into his upcoming movie
soundtrack of *Jodha Akbar* that had percussionist Sivamani jamming with
over 20 drummers on stage.

When it was time for the Fever 104 winner to come on stage, Parul Mishra put
her best foot forward. This is one concert I could come to with all my
friends. Usually, it tough to have them all together at the same place as
they all have different choices in music. But Rahman is a common favourite,
said 23-year-old Kamakshi Rao, who came from Gurgaon.

From six-year-olds to sixty-year-olds, they were all keen to wave their
hands and shake a leg. After all, you don't get to see the maestro in action
every day.

Enlargehttp://www.hindustantimes.com/PhotoGallery/Photos_Storypage.aspx?Photo=beb997a5-0f0f-43b8-bce4-0da637dec39b

His month-long U S tour kicks off on Sunday. Before whizzing off, A R Rahman
was in town for quick chats with the media. Some questions:
*News is that you've teamed up with Subhash Ghai again after Kisna.*
Nothing like that. We were working on a movie called Motherland. It didn't
happen because he had date hassles with his hero. But we've been in touch.
Now, he's come up with Yuvraj.. which I've accepted.

*You're judging the Tamil music band hunt show Oo La La?
*Yes, with Vasundhara Das but it's not on a national level. Right now, we're
only doing 20 episodes. It's restricted to Tamil Nadu. If it clicks there,
we'll try to push it to the national level. Large-scale ventures are
possible only if there's time.

*What's the news on your music for the stage show, Lord of the Rings?*
The preview is on in London already. It releases on June 19. The preview has
drawn positive reviews. I'm quite overwhelmed with that because I've worked
on it for quite a while.

*After asking her to sing for me for 17 years, my sister did just that in
Sivaji. I don't think I'll have to wait that long for Himesh. It's on the
cards. It should happen soon. You're suddenly into several anthems.*
(Laughs) No, no, it's just that lots of companies approach me for anthems.
The idea has to connect with me instantly, as with *Pray for me Brother*.
Taj is aimed at creating awareness to get the Taj into the list of the Seven
Wonders of the World. Anthems seem to find me.

*Is Himesh Reshammiya singing for you?*
(Laughs) Of course, I remember he wanted to sing for me. After asking her to
sing for me for 17 years, my sister did just that in *Sivaji.* I don't think
I'll have to wait that long for Himesh. It's on the cards. It should happen
soon.

*What went wrong between Farah Khan and you for the music of Om Shanti Om?
*She approached me for her film. I placed a condition for 33 per cent of the
music rights. She refused that and the deal fell through. I forgot about it
but I don't believe she has. I can't believe she's gone on record saying all
kinds of things about me.

After that, everyone who comes to me is mentally prepared for my terms and
conditions. These terms are followed all over the world, so why not here?

*Sivaji seems to have generated quite a bit of buzz in Chennai.*
Thank you. After a long time, I've composed music, which is completely
commercial. It's quite peppy and entertaining with all the variety you can
think of.

*Why have you done fewer Hindi films?*
(Smiles) I don't think so. I've done quite a few Hindi films. In fact people
down South complain that I do more Hindi films than South Indian films.

*Lajjo has been shelved. What happens to the compositions you've done for it?
*
Excuse me! The film has not been shelved. You can't take frivolous news
reports and the Internet as your Bibles. No official word
hasbeenissued.Thefilm is on. I've finished 80 per cent of its score
yesterday. Mani (Ratnam)
and I worked on some details of its music last evening.

*Don't you think you've become synonymous with period Hindi films?*
I love doing history-oriented projects. They give me a broader canvas,
whether it's *Lagaan, Mangal Pandey* or *Jodha Akbar*.

*Aren't there 12 songs in Jodha Akbar?*
Ooof! Who told you? There are only six songs in the film.

*A qawwali is already being talked about. Really?*
That's good news for me. But I can't officially talk about it right now.

*What's next?*
(Smiles) Mr Ghai's on my platter and Aamir Khan's *Gajini.*

Shekhar Kapur readies animation movie
--
By Businessofcinema.com Team
   17 November 2007, 10:01 PM

MUMBAI: Director Shekhar Kapur has an animation film under his belt. Titled
*Suitable Cockroach*, the film is being worked upon by animation studio,
Prana. Kapur, who is known for his story telling, is scripting the film. The
music of the film is by A R Rahman, who has also worked with the producer on
*Elizabeth -The Golden Age*.

The story of *Suitable Cockroach* revolves around the most hated Asian
creature - the cockroach. What's more, Kapur plans release the movie on the
internet first, after which the theatrical release will follow.

Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, Kapur says, I never go by what's being
done. The new media is a fascinating medium and I would love to experiment
my film on the net. I intend to release it on YouTube.com first.

About the expected returns, he adds, Downloads are the most expected
returns for a film being out on net first. I will be setting a new trend.

Kapur has been approached by some animation studios to ink film deals. He
informs, I am in talks with an animation studio called Animal Logic based
in Sydney. It will be a one film deal.

This apart, he is also planning to upload all his work in relation to Paani
on the net in terms of designs, pictures and blogs. When queried on the
reason behind this, he says, I want my audience to get linked with the
movie, so that when they watch the film they feel that they are a part of
the cast and crew. It is wonderful to communicate, I am the producer-I can
do it.

Before he went about donning a film director's hat, Shekhar Kapur was an
accountant, a model, an actor, a chat-show host and even a scuba diving
instructor! Diving has always been a passion. I was an instructor ages ago.
Whenever I get a chance, I go for a swim in the sea or go scuba diving,
says the director enthusiastically.

Shekhar jokes about how he's hoping that adman Prahlad Kakkar would
'someday' invite him to his scuba diving school at Lakshadweep. He assures
us that he's not going to take up his old job.

I discovered that life was not just about a career when I was 24, says the
critically-acclaimed direcor currently in town to promote his film
'Elizabeth: The Golden Age'. My life has been a journey from then on for
discovering new things and learning more about myself, he adds.

Apart from the last part of the Elizabeth trilogy, the director is also
planning to take up an animation film where the central character will be a
cockroach!

He has somehow managed to convince AR Rahman to be on board for this
project. The cockroach will be the only living character left in a world
when there are no humans left, he says.

Coming back to his controversial movie, we ask if he obsessed with
Elizabeth? It's a character that I can manipulate as most things related to
her and that era is almost mythical, he shoots back, admitting that he is
besotted by Cate Blanchett as she's one of the most talented actors in the
world.

But the one girl who has wrested all his attention right now is his
seven-year-old daughter Kaveri. I am planning a vacation with her in Goa.
There are times when at the end of the day she falls asleep on my shoulder.
I stay awake all night because I am scared that she might wake up if I
moved, he signs off.

*A R Rahman enthrals Delhi*

New Delhi (PTI): Renowned music composer and singer Allah Rakah Rahman on
Saturday rendered an enchanting performance, belting a mix of Hindi, Tamil
and English songs which made a 50,000 strong audience in the city swaying,
clapping and asking for more.

Beginning the performance with the number 'Thodi si raat aur hai...' from
the film Guru, Rehman, in his maiden public concert in the capital,
managed to keep the audience captive under the magical spell of his voice.

The musician was performing for the Fever 104 concert in which playback
singers Kailash Kher, Hari Haran, Madhushree, Chitra, Sivamani and others
took part.

The musical extravaganza which started an hour late than scheduled, had an
orchestra of 50 instrumentalists and 22 singers whose energy had the crowd
roaring for more.

Accompanying the music maestro, percussionist Sivamani and flutist Navin
were no less in mesmerizing the crowd.

Rehman asked the crowd to join him in his fight against poverty and he
rendered for the crowd on his piano the soul touching number from his album
Pray for me brother.

Apart from the usual favourite hit numbers ranging from hindi flicks like
Rang De Basanti, and Roza, his fans got a special treat when he gave
them a slice of music from the forthcoming Ashutosh Gowarkiker's film
Jodhaa Akbar.
