Re: [arr] "The best message I got after Jaane Tu… was from A. R Rahman": Abbas
ARR's best quote: "When one door closes, 7 doors might open" Tyrewala sure has got his one opened.. :) From: Gopal Srinivasan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, 10 November, 2008 5:12:09 PM Subject: [arr] "The best message I got after Jaane Tu… was from A. R Rahman": Abbas I'm here only because I had courage to ignore Ram Gopal Varma: Abbas Tyrewala By Subhash K Jha Abbas Tyrewala who started his career as a lyric writer has gone back to his roots. Last month he flew to Chennai to write the Hindi lyrics for A R Rahman's score for the chartbusting sounstrack Boys. Says Abbas, "This is the first time I've done something like this, convert the Tamil songs which are huge hits into Hindi for the dubbed Hindi version. The trick is to not translate the original words which I couldn't anyway because I don't know Tamil, but to go with the flow and rhythm." Abbas started his career as a lyricist. "But lyric writing was never a serious vocation. I did it as a passion and hobby. I wrote songs for Ram Gopal Varma's Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, E Niwas's Dum and Hansal Mehta's Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar. My lyrics were quite wacky. That chracterizes everything I deal with, including my finances." Abbas wanted to cast Farhan Akhtar in Jaane Tu… "At that time I didn't know Farhan was seriously interested in acting. I wanted to cast him in role of Sushant (played by Ayaz Khan), the debonair slightly arrogant character. Then when I heard Farhan was seriously interested in acting, doing leads I banished the thought. I think all writers-turned- directors would make a good actor.Me? I'd also act well if cast well, in a wacky role." Last month Abbas was actually mobbed in a mall in Chennai. "These two girls came up to me for a picture. We've had much bigger hits but somewhere people have connected with Jaane Tu…. The place I am in today comes from my having the intelligence to ignore Ram Gopal Varma years ago when I was writing a film called Ek for him. He had told me to change my name because he found my name to be too bizarre to be taken seriously as a writer. I stuck to my name. It's a difficult name and difficult face to forget." The era of star-directors seems to be upon us. Says Abbas, "Before Karan Johar there were Sooraj Barjatya and Aditya Chopra. The only reason they weren't stars is because they were reclusive. These were the first directors whose names were bigger than the actors. Then there was Ramu. But the culmination of this trend is Sanjay Leela Bhansali. With due respects he isn't a recluse like Sooraj Barjatya or Adi Chopra. These guys stayed away from the limelight because they wanted the film to be bigger than them. Sanjay is very clear he wants his name to be as big as his cinema. He's no producing his own films. I'm turning co-producer with my next film because I want to own my own films." Shekhar Kapoor says it's very difficult to be simple.Does Abbas agree? "I don't know. Different things come naturally to different people. I've a bit of Woody Allen in me. Honestly I never knew how Jaane Tu…Jane Na would turn out. The problem was not whether people would like Imran Khan. The problem was, would they respond to such a non-violent pacifist hero? The best message I got after Jaane Tu… was from A. R Rahman. He said this film would many open doors for me. And it did." A lot of writers don't succeed that well as directors. "That's because they give a playwright's touch to their dialogue-baazi. I'm completely involved with the cinematic medium. Jaane Tu… is my most commercial film. Now I want to march to my own drum beat." Abbas feels for too long he has been considered an avante-garde writer. "Do you know Munnabhai MBBS was originally meant to be a 1.5 crore film with Om Puri in the lead? Fortunately Vinod Chopra saw something in it." Abbas is not fully satisfied with Rock On, the second cult hit after his Jaane Tu…Jaane Na this year. "I had some issues with Rock On. But then I've major issues with my own film also It's a very interesting premise. Quite well shot a times. A few moments worked for me. But given the kind of reviews I had read, I was a little underwhelmed by Rock On. But then Arjun Rampal on stage looks like a few million bucks." http://www.santaban ta.com/cinema. asp?pid=23818 Connect with friends all over the world. Get Yahoo! Re: [arr] THE DAY I MET REHANAJI,

From: sriramhero2003 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, 8 November, 2008 4:10:47 PM Subject: [arr] THE DAY I MET REHANAJI, I had a chance to meet Rahmanji's sister Rehanaji. She shared a few incidents about thier childhoo days to me. Am sharing it here now, Rehanaji said during schooldays Rahmanji was equally naughty as any other boy of that age. She and Rahmanji used to fight always for almost everything. She also said that there would be no oral fights ever. Everytime they fought they used to hit eachother. Rahmanji used to get more angryand fight woth her most of the time because whatever the minimum number of friends he had used to go and play with Rehanaji at once they returned from school. Because Rehanaji used to throw off her bags and go out to play after the school but our Rahmanji used to come home and sit with the Harmonium after school. She shared more expeiences about them playing indoor games. Rahmanji used to play only indoor games during his childhood. His most favourites were carrom board and chess. He used to win over Rehanaji everytime they played carrom. Even if Rehanaji was in a stronger position to win Rahmanji would win the game by taking out his coins from the board when Rehanaji does not know. Everytime Rahmanji cheated the game would finally end in a big clash and a fight as usual. Rehanaji shared this incident very happily. She said after 20 Rahmanji became more silent and involved himself fully into music all the time. She said there was a time when she used to advice him but times changed when she started learning more things from Rahmanji. She said they speak more about spiritualism and music nowadaya. I would really fail on my dity if I dont mention about the prayer she had in between the chat. She very plitely said she'll be back after her prayers and went for prayer. This shows the level of devotion to God in Rahmanji's family. She shared more experiences like the emotional way Rahmanji's songs are. She remembered a daybefore the audio release of the movie Karuthama. She had the audio cassette with her. That was the time when they were building their house. She had gone to the terrace alone to check the amount of work getting completed. She said she listened to Porale ponnu thaye at that time and unkowingly she had tears flowing down from her eyes. She says Rahmanji's songs always takes time to grow on you. She feels that all the MD's are getting inspired from the works of Rahmanji. She then remembered another incident about the recording session in Rahmanji's studio for the song Poovukenna Pottu from BOMBAY. There is a baby which smiles in the song. Rhamanji asked Rehanaji to record her daughters voice for it which was only 6 months old. She then brought her child and made her sit before the mike. The baby started laughing in the beginning but soon started to cry at the top of its voice and it never stopped. So Rahmanji had to record the cry. Rehanaji became very confused on what Rahmanji would do with a crying sound because the songs itself was "nee siricha deewana" but Rahmanji had changed the cry to laugh somehow and inserted it in the song. These were the few incidents she had shared with me. Am really grateful to God for giving me an oppotunity to meet someone from Rahmanji's family. Although i haven't met Rahmanji in person, I found myself very lucky to have met Rehanaji who made me feel very comfortable throughout. Thanks alot to her too. She also said gajini audio is soon to release. Sorry bros if it was too boring. Felt i should share it with everyone. Regards, Janardhanan R. Connect with friends all over the world. Get Yahoo! Subhash Ghai recently got very overwhelmed with emotions at the music launch of his soon to be released musical extravaganza `Yuvvraaj'. While the occasion was very important to him, there was one special guest who made it all the more extraordinary for him and that was Karima Begum, mother of musical maestro A.R. Rahman. It was for the first time that Karima Begum made her public appearance. She flew all the way from her home town Chennai to Mumbai just to inaugurate the Music of `Yuvvraaj' where she presented the first CD to Subhashji. Subhashji still gets emotional reminiscing the day "After the music inauguration of `Yuvvraaj' I went to my room and while contemplating about the entire day I remembered my own late mother who made me what I am today…she taught me the value of relationships, love, she brought music to my life and of course the significance of blessings from near and dear ones. I was very close to my mother and even though she is not around but I can still feel her presence even today. When I first met Karimaji, I found the same love, simplicity and power in her; she brought the same smile on my face as my mom did. Yuvvraaj's music is scorching heights on the music charts all over the world and it has to be a blessing up from above". Re: [arr] Marmayogi indefinitely postponed
There's still a shimmer of hope.. Lets wait.. From: Gopal Srinivasan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, 7 November, 2008 8:55:18 AM Subject: [arr] Marmayogi indefinitely postponed Pyramid Saimira to no longer star in Marma Yogi D GOVARDAN. Financial Chronicle Chennai Article Rank THE Chennai-based theatrical chain company, Pyramid Saimira Theatres (PSTL) last big carrot to dangle market attention seems to have just slipped away from its grasp. Marma Yogi, the much touted magnum opus of Kamal Haasan has now been postponed indefinitely. Marma Yogi was to have been produced by PSTL on a first copy basis through an arrangement with Kamal Haasan's Rajkamal Films International. To be made in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, the initial estimates placed the production cost of the film at around Rs 120 crore. "He (Kamal Haasan) is not doing Marma Yogi now. It has been postponed," an associate, privy to the developments at Rajkamal Films International told Financial Chronicle. "The project has been postponed indefinitely as the star is now gearing up to do another project instead. Discussions are already underway with a few film companies," he added, when quizzed further. Marma Yogi was to feature Kamal Haasan in the lead and he was also billed to direct it. Two female leads – Trisha and Shriya Saran — were also roped in with plumb roles for the period film, which was positioned as a 'high cost, high value' film by Pyramid Saimira Group. It already had several false-starts, with a few deadlines fixed for film's launch and also for the commencement of the shooting. The launch venue too shifted from Chennai to Mumbai. But, the project failed to start till date. In fact, industry apprehensions over Pyramid Saimira's ability to take the film forward were raised quite a few months back and rumours that the actor may join hands with another company for the film also started doing the rounds. Subsequently, both Pyramid Saimira and Kamal Haasan came out with a joint statement in the third week of August this year, reposing their faith in each other's capability in taking up the project. Rajkamal Films International has signed an agreement with Pyramid Saimira Group. Any news to the contrary "is a slur on our bonafide partnership" Kamal Haasan had then said in his statement, issued along with that of Pyramid Saimira. "Marma Yogi has not been dropped. We are renogiating the terms," an official with PSTL told FC on condition of anonymity. " Be the first one to try the new Messenger 9 Beta! Go to http://in.messenger.yahoo.com/win/
[arr] Marmayogi to be Shelved for a few months.. :(
Kamal Hassan’s next film project titled Marmayogi which has Trisha, Hema Malini, Shriya and Shobana in the lead is said to be in doldrums due to financial constraint. The project is already estimated to be a 120 crore project and Kamal is eager to start the film project.Already Pyramid Samaira is financing this project and will also take the distribution rights. But due to the debacle of Kuselan at the box office the financiers of Pyramid Samaira are rethinking on this project. Kamal Hassan is deterred with this issue and is said to take up this project on his own with the support of some NRI’s. Kamal Hassan received a big blow yesterday when one of the NRI’s who supported this project backed off by saying that he is not having enough faith in this film. The films script is said to be based on ancient civilization concept and may be the project can be shelved for almost three to six months. http://hinducinema.com/tamil-cinema/tamil-movie-news/marmayogi-to-be-shelved-for-few-months.html Seems like an old news.. Targeting the family, the campaign will kick off later this week and cover print, television, radio, online and outdoors. "We want to position this event as being completely different from anything else including the IPL. It is the first of its kind since it only has the champion sides. So we came up with the tag line Champions Takre Toh Game Hi Badal Jaye," says ESS marketing director Nirmal Dayani. ESS got the ball rolling by getting AR Rahman to compose the anthem. The music video is being put together. "We want to emphasise the fact that AR Rahman is to music what the Champions T20 League is to cricket." The message that ESS is looking to send out is that when one talks of the Champions T20 League there is no comparison with anything else in this sport. The same applies to AR Rahman and his music. Dayani adds that cricketers who will take part in the event will be used in the campaign. The channel is shooting creatives with them. This is especially important since the channel is looking to create team loyalties and have fans bond with their favourite side and stars. Dayani adds that while the event will have all the excitement and entertainment associated with the T20 format, the fact that only champions are taking part in this event gives it an aspirational dimension. ESS is looking at tying up with retail outlets and other companies fior cross promotions. "We are in the process of finalising the deals. The aim is to offer consumers an enriched experience," says Dayani. The Champions T20 League takes place from 3-10 December 2008. Eight teams take part including Chennai Superkings and Rajasthan Royals who will represent India. Re: [arr] Interesting writeup on Rahman's music from naachgaana
:).. So well said.. From: Chord <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, 4 November, 2008 9:51:30 PM Subject: [arr] Interesting writeup on Rahman's music from naachgaana I respect this member a lot and he usually has very intelligent comments. This is a response to the thread about Yuvvraaj's music being declared best music of the year by T Series. "Rahman is always ahead of the competition. I don't say this as a matter of faith. There are other albums I've liked, other songs I've been addicted to (the Bhool Bhulaiya title track has been the single most addictive one for me in recent times!). But what we have to recognize and/or understand is that Rahman moves at a level of music composition (in the widest sense of the term) that is way beyond that of anyone else on the contemporary scene (for example SEL and V-S have admitted as much in different contexts). A Rahman album can be average by his standards but not with respect to the competition. We might often prefer other albums and composers the way one loves fast food even as one understands it's not high cuisine. A failed Beethoven musical work still does not equate Beethoven with John Williams! Much as a mediocre work by Tagore is only so by the poet's lofty standards and does not exactly make Prasoon Joshi better than him even on the latter's best day! I mean this sort of analogy when I compare Rahman with the competition. The `gifts' Rahman displays are simply far in excess to those other composers (assuming one can use the label for all of them and I have my doubts!) reveal. It's not just a matter of `tune' but also musical arrangements, transitions within songs, what I would impressionistically call the 'surprises' Rahman offers, the counter-intuitive features of his melodies, so on and so forth. One should just look at the list of instruments Rahman uses in each album. This is just one index of his skills as a composer. But there are many elements that are lost on the untrained ear (including my own) which is why it is important to pay close attention to what informed reviewers (in India, such as the great Ustads in their fields and only occasionally among `critics', and elsewhere in the West) say about his work. For example I recall reading when Swades came out that Rahman had used a very rare raag in one of the songs (I forget which one). This again points to the extent to which Rahman is familiar with the repertoire of his field in both the classical and the popular sense. Just recently he has suggested that anyone `who likes Beethoven' will like Yuvvraaj. There is a lot to be pondered on when one hears such a statement. And then as one goes through the gamut of one's career one sees everything really in his 'smorgasbord' (Qalandar's word I think in what was the best piece I have ever come across on Rahman's music) from North Indian forms to Carnatic ones, from jungle beats to classical stuff reminiscent of Bach. And one could multiply these examples. So it's not a question of blindly judging Rahman the best. it is also about paying `attention'. Connect with friends all over the world. Get Yahoo! I've been uploading some Vocal Only Songs and also working on high quality complete BGM of Yuva and Vocal Only Songs from Jeans. I am now confused whether I should upload them or not. --- On Mon, 10/27/08, kaissiom <[EMAIL PROTECTED] com> wrote: From: kaissiom <[EMAIL PROTECTED] com> Subject: [arr] kaissiom - Pls share the complete Khwaja mere To: arrahmanfans@ yahoogroups. com Date: Monday, October 27, 2008, 11:26 PM Hi guys, I totally understand and share your excitement about this unplugged versions. I'm not that selfish to keep these musical gems of Rahman to myself, that is why I share. Although, you have to understand that my decision to not share something like "Khwaja-unplugged" in its entirety stems from multiple other reasons and issues beyond my control. Someone close to Rahman has expressed to me that Rahman doesn't really like us ripping bits from DVDs and sharing with everyone. There are legal, copyright and other issues involved there, along with the fact that his hard work easily becomes available to all these copycats that use his music in TV serials and even some movies. Plus, Rahman doesn't solely own the rights of his music, I believe the producer owns the partial rights, if not all rights. I guess what I'm trying to get to is that sometimes we love someone so much that we end up hurting them without intending it. Rahman opposes remixes, especially remixing of his songs(without this consent). Imagine, if something like Khwaja's vocals were out in the public domain, it could spur remixes. A DJ or someone who wants to remix tries hard to eliminate or isolate the voices in the song. Therefore, finding just the vocals of a song is like a dream come true for the remixer. If I was to shared the complete version of Khwaja, it would be available in the public domain for anyone to use. They can try infinite number of beats and templates on Khwaja. They don't need Rahman, they will have his original singing and would simply need to add beats. Now, all this may sound far fetched, but we have to recognize the possibility of this occuring. One of the BGMs I extracted had ended up on a Radio channel. After that I had decided to limit my BGMs and other work. I do not want to be an accomplice to copycats and certainly do not want to hurt Rahman. Imagine the dedication, passion and divinity Rahman has put in Khwaja. And also imagine the layers of music and hours or days of hard work gone into making the music and beats etc. of Khwaja. And then imagine how well it's come out and how well it's layered. The vocals of Rahman are supposed to be hidden in the layers, never to be extracted the way I have extracted them. As I have expressed before, my talent or whatever you want to call it is an accident. I wish I had never discovered this accident. But now I know how to do it and I love it, but imagine my dilemma, I can not share it. But I can not resist sharing a small part of it. That way I feel I'm doing justice to both Rahman and the fellow Rahmaniacs. Bottom line, we all love Rahman and do not want to hurt him. Sharing Khwaja - unplugged - complete version will be like hurting Rahman. I hope I have explained some of the reasons behind my decision. I hope you understand the reasons and see the logic behind those. And if you don't agree with me then, I certainly hope you are able to forgive me. Although my methods are different, there are other simpler ways of extracting vocals which are already being discussed on the group. Sooner or later someone is going to post these unplugged versions online. I personally do not want to be that person. Now, I am not saying everyone should stop sharing BGMs and other musical bits.
