Re: a new Linux convert, loving it!

I left the Mac because nothing was moving forward on it. Voiceover is just the same as it was in the lion days, bugs still are there, nothing can be improved by the people that use it, and iMessages don't even automatically speak as they come in, as they do on the iPhone. Gosh, that bug/feature annoyed me a lot, but that was a minor reason.

Re: a new Linux convert, loving it!

I just switched to sonar gnu linux, and all and all, am never looking back on this laptop. the performance is damn near what I'd get on an ssd.It has certain querks, such as not being able to activate ctrl+alt+tab in mate and read it with orca, (info please) but other than that, a great option for those needing a change from the spying of microsoft and the restrictive mothering of apple.

Re: a new Linux convert, loving it!

Nope, can't dual-boot. Yes, you must wipe the drive, so save all important data that can't be recovered from the net later. For me I had nothing much that was original, so I did fine with wiping data. Yes, this should work on any Mac.

You have to wipe the entire drive? I can't duel boot OS X? Can I install this on my old 2006 intel Mac Mini?

Re: a new Linux convert, loving it!

#installing sonar on a Mac##IntroductionThis guide will walk you through the quest of installing Sonar GNU/Linux onto a Mac. The Mac I used for this is a late 2012 model mac Mini, with four gigabytes of RAM.##Requirements* A Macintosh computer with an intel processor.* Two USB flash drives.* a pair of headphones, just in case.##Getting startedBefore doing this step, I encourage you to read about the dd linux command, as we'll be using it. Search the web about putting operating systems on flash drives with DD, and the command's options and correct syntax, especially since this will wipe disks clean and replace them with the source you input.First, download the Mac Linux USB loader, located athttp://blog.sevenbits.tk/Mac-Linux-USB-Loader/This will allow you to start the process of installing Sonar. For now, this package only supports packages bas
ed on Debian, but we can work around this. Now, for the part that will initially not make sense. Download Vinux, fromhttp://www.vinuxproject.orgDownload the 64-bit edition, and make sure you know where it is.Now, launch Mac Linux USB Loader by pressing command+O on the application file. Once the application opens, press command+O, and find the file you downloaded, which should be called something like: vinux-5.0-amd64.iso, and press return. From there, the process of putting Vinux on one of the flash drives is simple, and the onscreen instructions explain themselves fine. Just select Ubuntu as the Linux family to work with, select your flash drive, then go ahead and start the process to put Vinux on that flash drive. When it finishes, exit the program, turn off the computer, and press the option key while powering on the Mac. Hold the option key for 15 seconds, then release, wait 10 seconds, press left arrow, then
press return. If all goes well, you'll hear Vinux come up talking. Now, choose to install Vinux. We do this to wipe the computer's hard drive clean, which will allow Sonar to boot uninhibitted. Follow the onscreen instructions, and write whatever you want for the personal info. Do not, however, restart. Vinux, on my Mac, did not start up after installation. So do *not* restart. Once done, launch Mozilla Firefox, and go tohttp://download.sonargnulinux.com/and download the 64-bit edition. When the download completes, launch the disk writer application, and burn the sonar .iso file to the second flash drive. Once that's done, restart the computer, but only leave the second flash drive in. If all goes well, Sonar will start. If you hear no speech after two minutes, press alt+super+S, which is option+command+S on a Mac keyboard. After orca launches, you can play around with Sonar. It should be mentioned, however
, that  before installing, you should insure that you are not connected to the internet. This is because of a bug in the Sonar installer which causes it to freeze at the keyboard selection stage while there is internet connectivity. If you have Wi-Fi, disconnect it; if you have an ethernet cable, unplug it. You may install normally, now that your mac is just another computer. You can make it what you want it to be, not what Apple dictates it to be.

Re: a new Linux convert, loving it!

Yeah, Linux runs amazingly fast on this Mac, way faster than the Mac did, especially when opening programs. It feels like I have an SSD on this Mac, lol. Once the TCL programs are sorted out, and Emacspeak works well, I'll start proofreading bookshare books as a volunteer.

Re: a new Linux convert, loving it!

Hi, i'm with you. I have been playing with linux for a few years now, and i think i finally found a flavor that i like. I stick to either Debien or Arch, and just run the mate desktop, and as little software as possible. Pretty much only install what i need, and not what a distrobution says i need. For example on this old Asus laptop i'm running, the Debien install is right around 2.8 gigs. It's tiny, and with firefox open, i only use like 512 megabytes of ram, sometimes less. I'm really leaning toward as minimal of an operating system as possible, but still keeping it functional.

a new Linux convert, loving it!

Hi all. I have officially switched to Linux. No more MacOS, just lovely Linux running on this Apple computer. I'm using Sonar GNU-Linux, and it works very well. I can even play PSP and PS2 games, ps2 I couldn't do on the Mac, and PSP in Openemu is outdated. There's even a package called OCRDesktop which allows one to read text from game screens. Just set up whatever keyboard shortcut you want for it, then when you're in the game window, just press it and there you go! The only problem I'm having is that I can't get the PS3 or PS4 controllers working, but that's a small price to pay for such freedom. I recommend it for anyone sick of Windows or Mac, and we do need more game devs for Linux, lol.
