Re: ways to earn some money?

I'm going to follow this topic as I am interested in looking at freelance writing opportunities as well.\I tried audio transcription, thinking I could slow down the audio low enough to hear every vowel and consonant, but sadly, my hearing loss is too severe that I actually need to have things transcribed for me.I'm currently signed up with an MLM provider, which sort of adds some supplemental income, but it's not much. Thanks to the stimulus cheque, though, I'm investing in a couple of stocks and mutual funds.

The thing to do is sit down and ask yourself what you are realistically good at and put your skills to work for you.  Freelancing is a good way to do that.

@jescat277: Very, very good point. THe only thing to be aware of is sites that talk about a career position as if they're selling a product, promising success in 5 minutes when in reality the demo mill will take your money and the client base runs dry. But yes. Everyone starts somewhere.

Re: ways to earn some money?

If you need to build a base  for customers, or cannot get work at all, making some money is better than making none, at least until you can build a profile and get trusted by other communities. That is just my opinion though. You can take your stats from these sites, and say, "I've helped x amount of clients," on your main site. These sites could be a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

@jescat277 Hopefully they're receptive. Even so, is it worth the 20%/15%/10% cut per project? This exact practice is experienced by any voiceover artist who goes through sites like voices.con, voice 345, voiceweasel, etc.

Re: ways to earn some money?

@Lucas1853: As a general freelancing word of advice, you generally want to avoid those (its the internet, anyone can do it) services that take cuts and ultimately stand to unfairly benefit from your work. This is especially true of Fiver and their pricing structure. If you truly want to go off on your own, the best way is to get coaching/experience in the field you want to do freelance work for, like if you wanted to be a freelance audio producer/editor. You should definitely expect to start out doing free work, and honestly if you don't like the sound of that then you might want to re-evaluate. But the first thing you want to do is to get that list of references/recommendations/testimonials, because you'll want to put that on your websites, and then actually market yourself as a business. This is where being good at self-promotion really, really plays in your favor. Where it's ok to be that walking billboard as long as you are talking to, rather than talking at. Remember: experience in both your craft and in business management will always come before acquiring equipment. Realize that this route leaves no room for wishy-washy/hypothetical plans, because any (success in five minutes) call-center reassurance is just snakeoil marketing at best, and depending on the provider, may make you lose more before real gain. But the longterm benefits to ditching the service-platforms are huge, making it worth the (shouldn't be called extra) time and resources spent. As you can see, you are in charge of operations and how you get paid. More importantly, middlemen aren't thrown into the equation to skim as much profit as they can off of the workers and the clients.

Re: ways to earn some money?

@TheEvilChocolateCookie: Now that, is interesting. I wonder how they were able to manage that considering the irs are hardasses about needing a print orm with a physical signature, so I take it they must've digitized that part too. Whatever api they're using, it would be nice to know why the big guys are apparently able to bypass the physical paperwork requirement but everyone else is left behind. Then again, the probably have a clearing house where they take care of printing off and mailing/faxing the forms. So it's still up to the IRS to make their own damn forms accessible.

I'm not legally allowed to do freelance yet (under 18). I have browsed the lists of jobs out of interest to see what they'll be like when I am, but I know a guy who does Freelance and I think he used Upwork. He probably got sighted assistance to take his photo. Maybe you could get something like a free five-minute Aira call to help with that. If not, yes there are probably other options like Freelancer. I guess my previous post was worded like I know more about it than I do, so I apologize for that.

@jescat277: You'll unfortunately have to have someone fill it out for you, the tax forms are standard-issue no matter where you work. Typically it involves filling out a w9, and those are a serious pain in the ass from an accessibility standpoint, because it is an untagged pdf that has no fillable fields detectable by a screen-reader.

Re: ways to earn some money?

I have no idea about the tax thing, as far as I know you have to send it only if you are living in the US. I still do occasional jobs on there sometimes and I find it accessible and easy once you get the hang of it. Just follow their guide carefully and everything will be okay. Imo it's much more accessible than transcribe me. I couldn't even finish the test transcript there so I gave up.When working with castingwords it is best to transcribe in word or in another service and paste the contents into the website's editor, it will save you some trouble with the many buttons and options their mini-player provides. You can also download the required file dirrectly to your pc which is a welcome addition. The files you need to transcribe are short, 5 minutes at max and it's easy for a beginner to get the hang of it.

Re: ways to earn some money?

If you are in the right place and the laws are friendly, you can get your hands on a stand mixer and do upwards of 20 batches of cookies a day with a standard home oven. Make the dough in the morning, then it's just shifting trays in and out all day long.  But being able to sell them depends on way too many local circumstances and if you already have a social network.Making candy of various sorts is also doable, though you need advanced cooking skills to be comfortable with molten sugar.  But the cost for doing it is very little, 99% of the ingredient list is literally giant bags of white sugar.  But some of it can ship across the country very well.I've never personally executed on either of these plans, so I have no idea how to market. For an odder one, there is a market for interesting bongs.  Some friends and I played with the idea of doing them in bamboo and beeswax, and as far as I know it's a good idea: at the time, equivalent versions were selling for around $100, and it's like $20 of materials each.  The downside is that you have to be able to source quality bamboo, which turns out to be harder than it sounds.Edit: selling for $100, not $10. Damn the missing zero.

Re: ways to earn some money?

There are transcription services where you can transcribe audio to text and get money for that. I don't know the logistics of all of it, how much you get, etc, but it's a thing. Also, there is a wide world of freelance opportunities out there. I primarily look at programming-related jobs because that's what I do, but there are opportunities for writing and other artistic pursuits, as well as accounting, customer service, translation, and you can probably find some of those transcription jobs there as well. Also voice acting if you have a studio-grade microphone, but I'd guess you don't since it's not something that most people have lying around unless they specifically do voice acting or music-related things. I'm not sure of all the freelance websites out there, but www.upwork.com looks to be good.

ways to earn some money?

Hey guys. So as we all know, the world is a disaster right now. Getting a job is going to be a lot harder than usual. In the meantime, do you know of any ways I could earn a little money? I want to earn enough for a small Braille display eventually. I thought of making some kind of Apple related training course or something like that, but I wouldn't know where to earn money from something like that. If I could satisfy the requirements, I could try to get on with Apple, but I currently don't have the space for a computer desk, and I don't want to be treated like someone who can't do anything useful for the rest of my life. I thought maybe you guys may have some suggestions. I'm not asking for handouts or anything like that, just advice.
