[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry

2018-01-18 Thread Pam Santos
I took down my trees on ancestry because it was private yet now when you
search they have all your information in the index no sense of it being
private. Some of you had access so If wondering why i removed them.

Any other place i can upload my trees and be private so others can still
view ?

Sam, not 100% sure, but you should investigate, FamilySearch.org. It is run by
the Mormons and is great for research and free, but I'm not sure about their
privacy policy or visitor rights.

Hope that might help.

I use Ancestry mostly to a place for digital info in case I lose hdd.
Does anyone else use Ancestry and did the places you list for births or
anything else get changed by them? I’ve all of a sudden had countries like
Senegal, Mexico listed for certain persons where entered say do Salao for my
gggrandmother and not it says Senegal.

Hi1   One of you men asked me about my past ancestry and since I was quite busy
at the time, said I'd write it later.   Now I forgot the name of the man who
asked me.   Of course I thought I'd remember!   duh   They were Sephardic
Jews but I cannot get them back to Spain.   I was able to get to Morocco but
that's as far back as I am able to get the Seriqui side.  Please let me know

Do any of you use ancestry? I went to look at some information there and my
subscription, my trees everything was gone and they say my user name or
email doesn't exist. Luckily I made the investment into family tree maker
and still have everything.
Has this happened to anyone else?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry

2009-05-21 Thread Lorraine Thomas
I am new to the group. I have researching my ancestry for about 6 weeks now
and found out alot of information. However, on the Portuguese side of my
family tree, I am at a standstill. What I know, My grandfather's name was
Frank Manuel Rose Marshall born 7-25-1877 in the Azores. He died February 27,
1962 in San Jose, California. He imigrated to the US in 1900. He married Mary
Frietas, born 3-25-1883 in the Azores. Mary had 10 children, 8 living children
that were born in the US. They lived in New Bedford, Mass. from 1900-1910 and
moved to Irvington, California, Alameda County. I beleive they were married
before they came to the US, since Mary's name was Marshall on the Census of
1900. I did find a Naturalization Paper for Frank Joseph Marshall issued on
11-24-1898 in Fayal. He was accompanied by his son Manuel Marshall. The paper
said that Frank was born in Pico 1-6-1843. He sailed on the St. George from
Fayal 3-1880 and resided in Alameda County until 1887. The paper was signed
Francisco Jose Marshall (prehaps) Machado. This could be my great grandfather.
Can anyone in the group help me confirm the island my grandfather and
grandmother came from? Also, can anyone confirm if Francisco Jose Marshall was
Manuel's, father? In addition, who were my grandmothers parents?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-08 Thread Pat Frade
I have finally found a way to request that the Azores Islands microfilms be
scanned/indexed and made available on Ancestry. Cheri and Rosemarie - we love
you and all you do for us. If Ancestry would do this, it would make Azores
Genealogy so much easier. I would ask that everyone on this list make a
request, let Ancestry know that those islands have information that many of us
want/need. They probably think they are so small, but we want the information
in an easier format!!!

Go to:
https://support.ancestry.com/kA21500QEDU?name=Providing-feedback-about-Ancestry-1460088569413&language=en_US&fromCase=

Click on the Suggestion box

Click on Historical record collections

Type a request.
Here is my request: I am very interested in having the microfilms from the
Azores Islands scanned and indexed so they are available on Ancestry. I belong
to a Google Group--Azores Genealogy and there are many in the group that are
active in Azores Genealogy. We have yearly conferences where we are taught how
to read the old priest's handwriting. It would make a huge different for all of
us if these records could be scanned and index. I pray that this request may be
considered. Thank you so much!

If everyone would make a request, it may help our cause.

it's private. I couldn't view it.

2018-01-19 Thread doreencaetano
I also removed my personal trees. I contacted Ancestry about the problem. They
assured me that they were private. I’ve only left one with Ancestry that it too
is suppose to be private. The only reason I did that was I’m helping this
relative develop their tree so we can learn how we are related.
I would like to share how I found out about this issue. I was emailed by
someone I did not know (may have been Pam). I want to thank them for the heads
up. Ancestry was not responding to my emails so I deleted all my trees from
their web site that same night. I’m hoping to keep this topic going so we can
all stay updated. Hopefully they will fix the problem but mostly likely not
since they did not acknowledge that they have a problem. I even asked to list
the benefits of the web site is I can not utilize the linked tree to keep all
my computers up to date with my most current genealogy information. They failed
to respond to that part of my questions. I believe I will not renew my
subscription until they fix this problem. Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Once again I want to thank the person that contacted me through Ancestry to let
me know about my trees. Once again I hope Ancestry resolves this issue. Doreen

On Ancestry, not only do you have to make your tree "Private", you also
have to make it not searchable. There are two different categories that you
have to click if you don't want others to see your info. But don't forget,
anything that is public record can be seen by anyone on ancestry (census
records, marriage records, phone and address directories, etc. Hope this
helps!

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry

2018-01-19 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I never have posted my tree on a public site such as ancestry. I do have my
tree on the Family Tree DNA website but on that site only people that match my
DNA can see my tree. While have all my tree there you can privatize any number
of people on your tree this depends on the genealogy program you use. The
problem with most programs they are not precise as to who you can privatize.
For example if you privatize living persons then what about that gg grandfather
that you don’t have a death date for? I feel you should at least have any
generation earlier that your grandparents visible for people to fine a common
ancestor. I do not include any generation newer than my generation (children
or grandchildren).

I do not have a problem with revealing my birth date or any other living person
on my tree as the information can be found in many other searches and besides
what can be done with a name and a birth date it is not going to get you in my
bank account. I feel that any one that wants to find information on you can
find it despite any of your efforts to hide it. I have seen people post their
tree on sites and when I look at it all the names are privatized so I wonder
why did they post it at all?

2018-01-19 Thread doreencaetano
According to Ancestry mine were set up that way but … then someone through a
message on Ancestry… said that they were able to search them. Since I did not
get a quick response from Ancestry I did what I had to do which was delete
them. My Ancestry trees are not accurate. They are working copies so as I find
information I incorporate it into the tree but I know that it could be wrong.
It does not become part of my paper tree until I have a confirmation of it
through some documents. I do not want to spread inaccurate information so my
trees need to be private. I’m always willing to help people. If they contact me
I give the information I have and also provide the documentation/references. If
you utilized information off my trees please contact me to obtain the
documents/references that verifies the information.

My guess is private means just that. If you had a private tree somewhere, it's
private. I couldn't view it.
If you ask me, all the cloud-based sites have some problems (My Heritage, Geni,
Family Search). Cheri

I also removed my personal trees. I contacted Ancestry about the problem. They
assured me that they were private. I’ve only left one with Ancestry that it too
is supposed to be private.
I even asked to list
the benefits of the web site is I cannot utilize the linked tree to keep all my
computers up to date with my most current genealogy information. They failed to
respond to that part of my questions. I believe I will not renew my
subscription until they fix this problem. Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Once again I want to thank the person that contacted me through Ancestry to let
me know about my trees. Once again I hope Ancestry resolves this issue. Doreen

I don't recommend uploading a tree to Family Search. I put mine there and

"discussion" and show your proof or lack of proof by second researcher, but
my tree remains breached. Then, I wanted to remove my tree. Can't do it

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry

2018-01-21 Thread Mary Bordi
Yes, the records are there if you look for them. But I take issue with the
people who just grab my research for their tree and link it to someone in
their tree who is not that person. Genealogy isn't about winning because
you have the most people in your tree. :)

If I see info in another person's tree I want to verify the info with
actual records. And I'm also glad to share what I know (and links to
documents) with someone I think I'm related to.

I have seen strange entries like that on other people’s trees and thought
it might have been an error on the suggestions that pop up when entering a
place name. I have not seen it on items I’ve entered on my own tree.

I’m going to go check in case they’ve done something!

[AZORES-Genealogy] ancestry DNA

2016-02-27 Thread Amy Francis
Forgive me if this has been answered a hundred times already, I have
searched through the group's history and not sure I found the answer.

My husband, of Sao Miguel ancestry, received a DNA kit from Ancestry.com
for Christmas. We got his results which are linked nicely on Ancestry. I
really only see one good match to another person's tree, and I have done a
fair amount of research in the Sao Miguel records.

Can I link this to the Azore DNA group that I have read a little about on
these pages.

I went to this website
- https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=AzoresIslands

which does make it seem like I can link it for $19 or $58.

I am just not sure of the benefit of this.

Any input would be great.

Thanks
Amy

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry Subscription

2016-08-08 Thread "E" Sharp
Friends and fellow researchersI have decided to end my Ancestry
subscription after being with them from the beginning. The cost has become
prohibitive and the fact that we are not to share information anymore
(unless we send directly from their site) and also that I am approaching 80
years of age are the biggest reasons. I will use it on an as needed basis
in the future. I have enjoyed helping others and have enjoyed having others
help me. With the help of one very special person on this list, I have kept
my promise to my mom so I feel my mission is complete. I will continue to
be a member of this wonderful list.

Do any of you use ancestry? I went to look at some information there and my

have everything.
Has this happened to anyone else?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry Research

2009-11-30 Thread Tony Rodrigues
I am looking for information on my ancestry, and I would very much appreciate
any & all help in trying to find some information.

I am researching information on Rodrigues & Mello, both family's are from
Portugal, The Rodrigues's were born In Funchal & Ponto DePargo, Madeira, the
Mello's were born in
Terceira, Azores, Portugal.

I am in need of Birth, Death, Marriage records, most were done in different
parishes, what I need to know is, are there any sites where I can go to
research, download or make copies, are there any in english or are they all in
portuguese.

Are there any Phone Numbers that I can call in Portugal where I can ask about
copies, I would appreciate any help that anyone can provide.

Thank you very much.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-08 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Pat, I am sure ancestry has tried many times to be able to put Azorean records
on their site. But why would anyone want to pay to look at records on Ancestry
when you can look at them free on the CCA website. The Azorean Government
originally had the LDS film the records and as such they are only available on
microfilm at the family History Centers or selected research sites. Or the CCA
site which includes more records than the LDS filmed in 1983. Ancestry is in
this business because the want to make money. I for one am against it.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-08 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Pat, the digital copies are available by the Azores Government and the
digital copies are available from the Family History Library in SLC. There
is no reason to have Ancestry do it and charge for what is free from both
the Government & SLC. The better question would be, can someone make an
index of marriages & births! That would be wonderful. At least, if the
marriages for each Island were done and made available to researchers, it
would help.
What I would like to see also is for someone to make an index for the book
Familias Faialenses!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-08 Thread Liz Migliori
I have a hard time with this. This information is online already and free for
everyone. Ancestry will charge you to get it. You can only get info from them
(that you have given them already) by being a member and paying that yearly
fee. Thank goodness for the other cite for those who cannot afford their
yearly fee
They because of the dollars that they collect they are able to market their
commercials so they can get more people to sign up and collect more $$$.
Family search is also free. When ever anyone asks me I recommend it over
Ancestry. Or go to a local FHL.

Just my opinion

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-09 Thread pat_frade
Rosemarie, you will have to show me in August when we meet. They may have
digital copies, but I do not know if they are searchable. I haven't had the
time to do any, but I know people who volunteer. They get a file, say 20-30
names at a time, and they read the record and on another screen they type
in names, dates, places on this form, which they submit, and that makes it
searchable. So then someone like me can go to ancestry and type in Frade
Manuel and it will bring up everyone with that name. I bet we could get
someone from the FHL to show the group. I think it you saw the potential
you might be amazed. I believe they are trying to make all records more
accessible for people, especially to those who can't read the language.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-09 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Pat,
That is not going to happen with the records of the Azores. They have
to many abbreviations and if you are not familiar with the
abbreviations, you will never transcribe the records correctly. I can't see
SLC ever being able to index them. It really needs to be done by someone in
the Azores who knows the names and abbreviations etc. The people who are
trying to extract all of the marriage records of Sao Jorge are having that
problem now. They are doing okay but need to have about 4 people to verify
and then we still have trouble with some. Anyway, are you planning on
coming with us to SLC or just visiting? Would love to see you!

Geneablogger says Ancestry is back up, but I can’t access it with FireFox
(times out). IE and Chrome seem to be working with the following message
appearing at the top of the page:

Note: You may be experiencing some temporary site issues with both the Search
and Trees features on Ancestry.com. We apologize for any inconvenience this
might cause and are working to resolve the issue and will have it back up as
soon as possible.

Find A Grave also is down. It appears to be coming up and then going down
again. Other sites as listed at <http://geneabloggers.com/>
http://geneabloggers.com/ may be having problems as well. Go to the third post
on the Geneabloggers page to see more info about the outages.

Amy, I'm sure that Cheri will get to you with the complete answer but for
now I will say DO IT! You will be able to link your results to FTDna and
join the Azores DNA Project and you will see how many you will match others
on this list. I believe that it is $19 but Cheri will now for sure and
guide you through the process!!

Hi Amy,

I would strongly encourage you to download your DNA record from Ancestry
and upload to GEDMatch.com (http://v2.gedmatch.com/login1.php). That is a
wonderful site that I use that has many more tools available than Ancestry
including chromosome browser and triangulation tools. The best thing:
it's free! (Some more advanced tools are available for a small fee). I've
used it to locate lots of cousins including some that are on this list.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] ancestry DNA

2016-02-28 Thread Cheri Mello
Amy,

You need the Autosomal Transfer. That link is here:
https://www.familytreedna.com/AutosomalTransfer
They have the free version, but it's a limited account. To unlock
everything is $39 (versus the $99 to retest plus the $12 or so S&H).

Download your raw data from Ancestry and then upload it to FTDNA via the
directions provided in the link above.

When you transfer over, you can join the Azores Project at FTDNA. We have a
few hundred people of Azorean descent who have tested their autosomal DNA
(FTDNA calls this Family Finder). So you will have more Azorean matches
there than on Ancestry or 23andMe. Also, you will have access to us project
administrators who can help you. As the project grows, the admins will be
able to figure out various family groups for our project.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry Research

2009-11-30 Thread Cheri Mello
Tony,

A good how-to can be found here. You might want to bookmark it (in
English):
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo.html

Although the focus of this list is the Azores, you will find a few Madeirans
here who do research. For a list devoted to Madeiran research, go here (in
English):
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/PRT/PRT-MADEIRA.html

Madeira GenWeb is here (in English): http://patriciajcorbera.com/

The time period you are researching will determine where you write for
records (or order film). A few things are coming online. For the Azores
(but nothing except one marriage index) can be found on the Center for
Knowledge of the Azores (CCA) web site (in Portuguese):
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/

The Archive Regional of Maderia (ARM) is here (in Portuguese):
http://www.arquivo-madeira.org/index.php
I'm not sure of they years they cover.

You will have to provide the years you want. Records that record an event
that has occured within the last 100 years are housed at the Civil
Registry. You probably won't find those online. Records that are older
than 100 years are housed at the archives. The archives of the Azores were
filmed in the 1980s. You can order film from your local Family History
Center that covers from the beginning to the 1870s or 1880s depending on the
village/church you are researching. I'm not too sure of the time period for
the Madeiran film.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry DNA test

2017-11-27 Thread Cheri Mello
Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) where the Azores DNA project (and other Portuguese
based projects are housed), tests a different amount of SNPs. FTDNA tests
almost twice as much (I think it's 48% more) SNPs than AncestryDNA. FTDNA
uses the standard chip to test your DNA. AncestryDNA (and 23 and Me) has a
customized chip where they have removed almost half the family markers and
replaced them with health markers. Many know that 23 and Me is more
interested in the health aspect than in genealogy. AncestryDNA anonymizes
your DNA data (strips your name) and sells it to Big Pharmaceutical,
reportedly for $750. So when you are reading AncestryDNA's Terms and
Conditions, that's what they mean by sharing. You can search Roberta
Estes' blog, www.dna-explained.com to read her article on that.

So if someone you know tested on the FTDNA platform and your sibling or
cousin tested on the AncestryDNA or 23andMe platform, they will have less
matches when the transfer to FTDNA for free than the FTDNA person who took
the test on that platform. FTDNA allows the transfer people to test on the
FTDNA chip for $49. I think $49 is pretty much their bottom price.

Len S,

I don't know what "Ancestry U.S. Discovery" is (unless it's the latest term
for an Ancestry.com membership). But if it's affiliated with Ancestry.com,
then their World section has nothing on the Azores, Cape Verde, Madeira, or
Portugal. The records for us of Azorean descent are coming online at the
CCA or can be ordered through a local Family History Center (FHC).

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry & Affliates Outage (DDos)

2014-06-18 Thread Cheri Mello
Ancestry had a DDos (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. Not only did
this affect Ancestry, it affected EVERYTHING that it runs. Find-A-Grave
was down and Rootsweb is still down. Ancestry runs Rootsweb. This means
that the Madeira list (hosted on Rootsweb) is down. So is the Azores
GenWeb (hosted on Rootsweb). It took a couple of days to get Ancestry back
up and Find A Grave came up earlier today. So they are working on it.

And for those who wonder what a DDoS is, here is an explanation of DDoS.
Thomas MacEntee, genealogy blogger, cited the Stack Exchange.
==
To learn more about what exactly a DDoS attack is, check out this write up
on Stack Exchange:

Imagine a shopping mall. By definition, anybody can enter the mall and then
browse the shops. It is public. The shops are expecting people to come by,
look at the displays, maybe enter and then buy things.

In the mall, there is a shopkeeper, who sells, say, computers. Let's call
him Jim. He wants people to come by and see the computers and be enticed
into buying them. Jim is the nice guy in our story.

Let there be Bob. Bob is a disgruntled nihilist who hates Jim. Bob would go
to great lengths to make Jim unhappy, e.g. disrupting Jim's business. Bob
does not have many friends, but he is smart, in his own twisted way. One
day, Bob spends some money to make the local newspaper publish an ad; the
ad states, in big fonts and vivid colours, that Jim runs a great promotion
at the occasion of his shop's tenth birthday: the first one hundred
customers who enter the shop will receive a free iPad. In order to cover
his tracks, Bob performs his dealings with the newspaper under the
pseudonym of "bob" (which is his name, but spelled backwards).

The next day, of course, the poor Jim is submerged by people who want a
free iPad. The crowd clogs Jim's shop but also a substantial part of the
mall, which becomes full of disappointed persons who begin to understand
that there is no such thing as a free iPad. Their negativeness makes them
unlikely to buy anything else, and in any way they cannot move because of
the press of the crowd, so business in the mall stops altogether. Jim
becomes highly unpopular, with the ex-iPad-cravers, but also with his
shopkeeper colleagues. Bob sniggers.

At this point, Jim contacts the mall manager Sarah. Sarah decides to handle
the emergency by calling the firemen. The firemen come with their shining
helmets, flashing trucks, screaming sirens and sharp axes, and soon
convince the crowd to disperse. Then, Sarah calls her friend Gunther.
Gunther is a son of German immigrants, a pure product of the US Melting
Pot, but more importantly he is a FBI agent, in charge of the issue.
Gunther is smart, in his own twisted way. He contacts the newspaper, and is
first puzzled, but then has an intuitive revelation: ah-HA! "bob" is just
"Bob" spelled backwards! Gunther promptly proceeds to arrest Bob and send
him meet his grim but legal fate before the county Judge.

Finally, in order to avoid further issues with other nihilists who would
not be sufficiently deterred by the vision of Bob's dismembered corpse put
on display in front of the mall, Sarah devises a mitigation measure: she
hires Henry and Herbert, two mean-looking muscular young men, and posts
them at the mall entries. Henry and Herbert are responsible for blocking
access should a large number of people try to come in, beyond a given
threshold. If a proto-Bob strikes again, this will allow the management of
the problem on the outside, in the parking lot, where space is not lacking
and crowd control much easier.

Morality: a DDoS cannot be prevented, but its consequences can be mitigated
by putting proactive measures, and perpetrators might be deterred through
the usual, historically-approved display of muscle from law enforcement
agencies. If botnets become too easy to rent, predictable consequences
include increased police involvement, proactive authentication of users at
infrastructure level, shutting off of the most disreputable parts of the
network (in particular Internet access for the less cooperative countries),
and a heavy dose of disgruntlement and sadness at the loss of a past, more
civilized age.

What size are you talking about? 24 x 24 or larger? I have had kinkos
print some large charts. I do not know how the prices would be compared
between them. If you have other copy places compare prices. I have seen
sample prints from the company you are asking about and they do a nice job.
Hope this helps

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry Charts Poster size

2012-05-05 Thread Eileen Leite
Make some calls: Office Depot was cheaper in my area than another well-known
place. Also, 'standard sizes' like 2'x3' may be significantly cheaper than
odd sizes. If your chart blows up to an odd size - mine did -- ask if they
will print as a standard size, ie add white space. I had my fanchart
printed in color and mounted on foam board for a display, and it was about a
third the price to have it made 'standard' rather than proportional.

My chart is big, when I first started out 15 yrs ago I had taped them
together (I actually had my niece do it lol) at that time it was 8ft long.
So you can imagine how big it is now. So actually I am doing a chart for
my ex husbands grandmother who is 93 years old, which is the Portuguese
side. If I was to print off and tape its 90 pages.

How big does Genealogy Masters print charts? And your friend?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry Charts Poster size

2012-05-06 Thread Ralph Sellars
Hello:

To print large charts from my FTM (now Ancestry) genealogy program  I use the
"BANNER" capabilities of my domestic HP printer.

I haven't noticed that printer companies advertise this capability and the help
at the big box stores I visited when I bought my current printer generally were
not aware of this capability.  I had to call HP and ask them which models had
this function.   My current model is an HP Photosmart Premium.

At my last family reunion I went to my local appliance store and got a few
refrigerator boxes, opened them up, and set them up ,down one side of my
garage, across the front of the car and back out to the front of the garage (so
I could still keep my car there-in) upon which I pinned a descendant chart of
my immigrant grandfather.   The chart was close to 40ft long using folded paper
!

I have printed charts through family chart masters... They have several options
to print and the longest I have printed so far is 3 feet tall by 85 feet
long... I have over 7000 people in my tree mostly non-Portuguese... It is a
useful tool.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry Look Ups and Terms of Service

2016-03-09 Thread Cheri Mello
The following has come to my attention.

For those who have an Ancestry subscription, you agreed to their Terms of
Service. Which said somewhere in there that you are using Ancestry for your
PERSONAL USE. That means you MAY NOT use Ancestry to do look ups for others
on this list or any other list or forum. If you do, and you post publicly
on the Internet about the lookup, you are in violation of your Terms of
Service and Ancestry can close your account. I know you all mean to help,
however, that's not what is in Ancestry's Terms of Service. Therefore,
postings that share information copied from Ancestry are not allowed here
on this list. Sorry, it's just the way things are.
