Re: [Bibdesk-users] The BibDesk input manager – a question and a plea
I'm sick today so decided to try hacking this into TeXShop myself. Please download http://homepage.mac.com/amaxwell/.Public/TeXShop.app.zip . I've basically integrated the guts of the input manager into TeXShop, using our newer Distributed Objects API. Barely tested, no warranty, use at your own risk, etc. This is based on the source from Dick Koch's site, since their svn repository seems out of date. I removed 30+ MB of QuickTime movies and PDF files from it so the upload was a reasonable size, which probably broke some help features. Oh, it's also missing the Spotlight importer since it doesn't play well with my build setup. Just a short feedback: So far, this seems to work nicely. No problems on my part. Something I didn't notice before: The autocompletion is case sensitive. It only reacts with lowercase \cite commands. Biblatex introduces \Cite command with a capital letter. they're meant for names with a prefix ('von part') at the beginning of the sentence, so that biblatex knows that it has to capitalize this specific case. BibDesk's autocompletion ignores this. simon -- Simon Spiegel Steinhaldenstr. 50 8002 Zürich Telephon: ++41 44 451 5334 Mobophon: ++41 76 459 60 39 http://www.simifilm.ch „Gee, I wish we had one of them doomsday machines.“ General Buck Turgidson - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. There are some problems with this. First of all, the preview is not a single view, we can swap in all kind of views all of which handle their own context menu. A popup would mean some annoying layout stuff (in particular inside the horrendous split view). And it would mean an almost empty horizontal space with a single small popup somewhere at the end, which probably won't look to nice. So we have to think about this very hard before trying to add this. In particular as it doesn't gain so much, given that it's already available in 2 places. Re: [Bibdesk-users] Best practices for URL fields?
Generally, the Url and Local-Url fields are deprecated. So don't assume it's there if it's not a standard (required or optional) field. We encourage everyone to remove old style URL fields and switch to the new file layout. The URL field is only to be used for inclusion in the bibliography, in particular for types like url or webpage. So in templates you should most often use something like [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of $urls.Local-Url.path, samilar for the URL. Also $fields.URL, and $URL, was probably never a good choice, as it may contain latex stuff. The first linked file (or URL) should be the most relevant one. On 28 Jan 2008, at 11:11 PM, James Harrison wrote: I know URL fields have been discussed a good bit, but I'd just like to make sure I'm using them as intended in the templates that are supplied with CiteInPages--and that I express accurately to other users any issues in the way I'm using them that they should understand. For several types of references that are commonly accessible electronically, I have an optional end to their template that uses $fields.URL (or just $URL) and lastchecked to generate a statement like Available from url goes here, last checked on date in lastchecked goes here. Since you can have multiple links per file, there is the potential for some confusion. That leads to a couple of comments and questions: $fields.URL has no relation to $URL (in fact, you should never use $URL in a template). For types that have a Url field it makes sense to refer to $fields.URL or $urls.URL. Otherwise, you shouldn't use it. 1. The url and local file fields seem to work fine in separating the links correctly. I assume that the local file field gets everything starting with file: and the url field can contain http, ftp, gopher (if any are left), etc. It appears that mailto:; isn't supported yet :-). There is no local file field (unless you mean something like Local- Url). There are local files. And yes, it gets every file: URL. Otherwise it will be interpreted as a remote URL. 2. My understanding is that there can be multiple URL fields. If so, does $fields.URL get the contents of the first URL field? Also, do I remember correctly that the first field sorts to the top (front, I know it's a grid) of the URLs in the thumbnail previews and that you can change the order of the fields by dragging the thumbnails-- allowing a choice and visual confirmation of what will be returned by $fields.URL? You're mixing up things. Again, you better not think of linked files/ URLs as fields. They are saved to fields, as that's what we need for bibtex, but those fields do not exist in the program. $fields.URL refers to a (real) field named Url. It has no relation to the linked remote URLs (it can be the same, it can be totally different). 3. Can there be more than one lastchecked field and if so is there a linkage between URL fields and lastchecked fields? I'm also OK if there is one lastchecked field that should be associated with the primary (frontmost) URL field. Lastchecked is just an ordinary field. So there's only at most one. It is just what it is set to, there's no relation to any linked file or URL. 4. Does my general approach seem OK for the way URLs and lastchecked are intended to be used now? No, see my remarks. By the way, it would be slick if there was a way from the thumbnail views to set a URL as the main URL and also reset its lastchecked date to today. Jim Harrison UVa The first one is supposed to be the main one. And lastchecked is the user's responsibility, see above. Christiaan - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. And if I drop my file to local-url field in 1.3.14, file name is not followed this combination rule. it happen only when I drop the file into the drop box. Can any one tell me about it too? That it is doable or not is something I don't have the expertise to comment on. I say that because there is a choice: do you want %u, %U, %n, and how many characters and where? We can't know, because we can't readUsersMind. Doing something arbitrary is wrong. Moreover just sticking it at the end would be wrong because it would screw up the file extension. sorry... by end, I meant end of the base file name. So, in my case where I stick %u2 As We May Think.pdf becomes As We May Think(aa).pdf Now, for me, (aa) is as meaningless as (squarerootofminus1) so I don't care what it is. It could well have been placed there by the tooth fairy. I guess it is needed by the program, so there you have it. Sticking it at the end of the basename means that the extension doesn't get messed up and I can still sort/read my filenames without getting puzzled by the to-me-meaningless unique string.
